Andre Monteiro

Andre Monteiro was born on July 20, 1981, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and first encountered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of ten through his childhood friend, Michel "Buiu" Porfirio, who had recently taken up grappling. The two trained together from an early age, and Porfirio would go on to earn his own black belt — a testament to the strong martial arts culture that shaped Monteiro's formative years.

Monteiro's earliest instruction came from two highly respected figures in the Brazilian grappling community: Rodrigo Medeiros and Francisco Albuquerque, the latter widely known by his nickname "Toco." Both coaches trained within the Carlson Gracie lineage, and it was under this tradition that Monteiro built his foundational skills. Together, Medeiros and Albuquerque guided him through his yellow and orange belt promotions. When Medeiros relocated to the United States, Francisco Albuquerque assumed full responsibility for Monteiro's development, maintaining the technical rigor and consistency that defined his progress.

With Rodrigo Medeiros no longer based in Brazil, Francisco Albuquerque became Monteiro's sole mentor, guiding him through the intermediate ranks and preparing him for the highest distinction in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In March 2003, Albuquerque promoted Monteiro to black belt — a milestone reached at approximately 21 years of age, reflecting over a decade of dedicated training and genuine competitive development.

Competitive Emergence on the International Stage

The Carlson Gracie lineage equipped Monteiro with a direct, competition-tested technical foundation that translated effectively to the international stage. In the years following his black belt promotion, he entered the major IBJJF circuits and began building his reputation at events such as the Pan American Championship and the Brazilian Nationals. A third-place finish at the Pan American Championship in 2005 served as one of his earliest notable black belt results, signaling his capacity to compete at an elite level against top-tier opposition.

In 2008, Andre Monteiro traveled to the United States to complete a three-month intensive English language course, intending to return to Brazil shortly after. A well-timed invitation from a contact within the combat sports industry changed the trajectory of his plans, presenting him with the opportunity to remain in the country as a professional BJJ instructor. Monteiro accepted, and what began as a brief academic visit evolved into a long-term career.

Building an Academy and Competing at the Masters Level

Monteiro established himself in San Antonio, Texas, before opening his own academy — a move that anchored his dual identity as both competitor and educator within the American BJJ community. Representing Nova Geração and BJJ Revolution Team, he built a respected coaching presence while sustaining a high level of competitive output at the Masters level. Between 2012 and 2017, he accumulated a series of IBJJF Masters-division titles, including gold at the IBJJF World Masters in 2013, the IBJJF Pan American NoGi Championship in 2011, and the IBJJF European Championship in 2017. His competitive reach extended to Europe as well, with a podium finish at the IBJJF European Open and a gold medal at the IBJJF Rome Open in 2013 — demonstrating that his drive to compete remained fully intact alongside his growing responsibilities as a full-time instructor.
