About this video
Transitioning from pressure passing to securing an arm triangle:
- Start by making a grip on the sleeve or shoulder instead of hugging the opponent's body, to control their upper body.
- Push the opponent's leg down to the mat to help bring their leg onto your shoulder, or use your arm to pin the leg down.
- Bring your knee and shin over their thigh to prepare for the pass.
- Go under the opponent's head and, instead of back stepping, pull their leg down to the bend of your arm and then to your hip.
- If the opponent's arm is flat, push it up and drop your head to the mat. If they start framing, push into them to generate momentum.
- When the opponent pushes back, use their force to push their arm across and secure the head and arm position with a gable grip.
- Drop your head towards the mat and lift your hips, hooking your right shin over their hip to control both hips.
- Ensure you don't lazily step out and allow them to regain half guard. Instead, drop your hip to the mat while staying propped up on your elbow.
- Come up to your knees to finish the head and arm choke, focusing on dropping your shoulder straight down rather than squeezing.
Remember to maintain control throughout the transition and apply pressure downwards when finishing the choke, rather than squeezing or driving upwards.
