Addressing the knee shield in De La Riva (DLR) guard:

  1. When the opponent hugs the leg, it can be easier to break the DLR hook due to the angle created.
  2. Break the DLR hook by stepping over the hooked leg.
  3. Reach for the opponent's tricep from the outside of their leg to pull them over, even if they establish a knee shield.
  4. To pass the knee shield, drop the knee near the opponent's head to the mat and reach for the middle of their back with the hand that was on the collar.
  5. Create pressure by pulling the opponent in, making them uncomfortable and distracting them from maintaining the knee shield.
  6. Use the hand on the thigh to push the knee shield down and clear it, positioning yourself in the same spot as before.
  7. Reach for the back of the opponent's pants with a "wedgie grip" and start turning back to face them.
  8. Switch the grip back to the cross face and drop your hip to the mat, forcing the opponent to turn away.
  9. Establish side control, maintaining pressure and control throughout the transition.

Key points include breaking the DLR hook, dealing with the knee shield by creating pressure and discomfort, and transitioning to side control with proper grips and body positioning.
