Sebastian Brosche's grappling journey began on the judo mat at age seven, where he discovered an immediate and enduring passion for the sport. His commitment over the following decades was total, ultimately earning him a second-degree black belt — Nidan — in judo through years of disciplined, high-level training.

By 2007, at age 23, Brosche made the pivotal decision to incorporate submission wrestling into his regimen before committing fully to BJJ. In a February 2017 interview with BJJ Heroes, he articulated the reasoning behind the switch: "I realized after trying BJJ a few times that this sport was what I had been looking for. Judo was the only option when I was young, but as BJJ started growing in Europe it was natural for me to do the switch. The rules in jiu-jitsu are much more favorable to me than those of Judo, as you can get really far with technique and flexibility rather than strength and explosiveness." The technical demands and ruleset of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu aligned naturally with his physical attributes and competitive mindset.

His first gi instructor was Peter Blackwell of Checkmat Sweden, who introduced Brosche to the fundamentals of the sport and awarded him his blue belt. Seeking a higher level of development, Brosche relocated to Oslo, Norway, to train under Eduardo Rios — known as "Teta" — the founder of Frontline Academy. Under Rios, Brosche evolved from a promising prospect into an elite competitor and, ultimately, a black belt.

Building a Foundation: Purple Belt Success

Before reaching the brown belt division, Brosche established himself as a formidable presence on the international circuit. At purple belt, he captured double gold — weight and absolute — at the IBJJF World Championship in 2010, and added IBJJF European Open titles in 2010 at blue belt and 2011 at purple belt. He also claimed the UAEJJF World Pro Trials in 2011, signaling early that he possessed the tools to compete at the sport's highest levels.

Brown Belt: A Sustained Campaign

At brown belt, Brosche's campaign was prolific and consistent. From 2013 onward, he was a fixture on the podium at major IBJJF events, earning third-place finishes at the IBJJF World Championship in both 2013 and 2014. In 2013, he also claimed bronze at the UAEJJF World Pro Championship. His 2015 performances were particularly sharp, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the IBJJF European Open Championship, alongside a bronze in the absolute division at the same event — results that earned him recognition as one of the top brown belts of that year.

After four years competing at brown belt — a tenure that reflected both the depth of the division and the breadth of his own campaign — Eduardo Rios promoted Brosche to black belt in December 2016, marking the culmination of a long and distinguished climb through the competitive ranks.

Brosche is widely recognized within the Scandinavian and international BJJ community for his commanding top game, a hallmark that draws directly from his judo foundation. Years of high-level judo instilled in him a deep understanding of positional control and weight distribution — qualities that translated seamlessly into a dominant presence from top positions in BJJ.

Central to his submission arsenal is the Kimura Lock, for which Brosche has developed a particularly sharp eye. His ability to identify and capitalize on kimura opportunities from top positions reflects a sophisticated grasp of mechanical leverage and body positioning, attributes refined across decades of grappling in two disciplines.

The Origins: Injury, Recovery, and Discovery

The roots of Yoga for BJJ lie in physical necessity. By 2011, years of intensive judo and jiu-jitsu training had left Brosche with serious back pain that threatened his ability to continue competing at a high level. That same year, he met Stine Hegre, a yoga expert who would later become his wife and creative partner. Her guidance introduced him to yoga as both a rehabilitative and performance-enhancing practice.

The results were transformative. Brosche experienced meaningful improvements in his grappling through increased dexterity and the broader health benefits of consistent yoga practice. Recognizing the potential value for other grapplers, he began sharing early yoga videos online — filmed with rudimentary equipment but grounded in genuine insight. The response from the BJJ community was immediate and enthusiastic.

Building the Platform

Encouraged by that reception, Brosche and Hegre developed a structured, purpose-built yoga program specifically tailored to the movement demands of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. The result was the launch of Yoga for BJJ, an online platform that was the first of its kind in the grappling world. The site offered a series of programs designed to improve flexibility, prevent injury, and enhance performance on the mat.

Yoga for BJJ grew to serve thousands of practitioners globally, establishing Brosche as a pioneering figure at the intersection of grappling and wellness. The platform stands as a widely used resource within the BJJ community — a model for how targeted ancillary training can meaningfully elevate both competitive and recreational grappling.

Alongside his adoption of yoga, Brosche underwent a broader reinvention of his health habits that included transitioning to a plant-based diet. This shift positioned him as one of the first full-time vegan athletes in professional jiu-jitsu, placing him well ahead of broader trends in combat sports nutrition.

His motivation was rooted primarily in ethical conviction rather than performance trends or social identity. In his February 2017 interview with BJJ Heroes, he addressed the subject with characteristic directness: "Unlike the stereotype of vegans, I do not believe that mosquitoes should have the right to vote. Rather, I think it's obvious that every living thing that can feel pain has a right to a good life." His concern centered on the conditions of factory-farmed animals, which he identified as the principal driving force behind his dietary choices.

Within Brosche's broader lifestyle framework, the plant-based diet and yoga practice function as complementary pillars supporting athletic longevity and consistent performance. Rather than treating nutrition and recovery as secondary considerations, he integrated them as foundational elements of his approach to competing and staying healthy across a career spanning multiple grappling disciplines. In doing so, Brosche emerged as a visible and articulate example within BJJ of how choices made away from the mat can meaningfully shape a competitor's durability and quality of movement over the long term.
