Roberto Atalla

Roberto Atalla was born and raised in the Botafogo neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro, a district historically intertwined with the identity of the Botafogo football club. Despite those local ties, Atalla grew up a passionate Flamengo supporter — a loyalty that speaks to the independent spirit he would carry throughout his life. It was within this vibrant Rio de Janeiro environment that he first turned to martial arts, driven by a practical need for self-defense both at school and within the surf culture he inhabited, a necessity made more pressing by his smaller physical stature.

Atalla had long admired Bruce Lee and was drawn to the discipline of martial arts training, but his options were limited. Kung Fu was inaccessible in his neighbourhood, and Karate struck him as too rigid and stylised to function as a realistic combat system. Capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian martial art, became his first discipline, providing an early foundation in movement, rhythm, and self-defense. It was during these formative years on the streets and mats of Rio that Atalla earned the nickname "Risada" — a moniker that would follow him throughout his career.

The Decision to Pursue Jiu-Jitsu

In 1990, Atalla made a pivotal decision to transition from Capoeira to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, convinced that the grappling art offered a more honest and effective approach to combat. He began training in the Tijuca district under Jean Jacques Machado, at an academy that would prove to be one of the most historically significant training environments in the sport's development. The mats there were shared with a remarkable generation of fighters, including Renzo Gracie, Roberto Correa, Helio Soneca, and Vinicius Magalhaes, among many others — a lineage that reflected just how fertile that era was for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Refinement and Early Advancement

In 1992, Atalla travelled to California for an extended period of training with Rickson Gracie, an experience he credits as genuinely transformative in his development as a fighter. He returned to Brazil in 1993 a more complete grappler. Jean Jacques Machado awarded him his blue belt before relocating to the United States, after which Atalla continued his progression by training at several of Rio de Janeiro's most respected academies, including Renzo Gracie's "Lagoa" academy and the Gracie Ipanema academy. It was through this period of immersion across Rio's top training rooms that he earned his purple and brown belts.

Black Belt and the Road to Brazilian Top Team

A disagreement with Carlos Gracie Jr., the head coach of Gracie Barra, led Atalla to seek a new training home. He found it at the Rio Jiu-Jitsu Club, an institution that would later evolve into Brazilian Top Team. There, he came under the guidance of two foundational figures in the sport: Murilo Bustamante and Sergio Bolao Souza. In 1998, Sergio Bolao Souza awarded Atalla his black belt, marking the culmination of nearly a decade of dedicated training through Rio's golden era of Jiu-Jitsu.

Dominant Performances at Purple and Brown Belt

Atalla's competitive record reflects a career built across multiple belt levels, with some of his most commanding performances arriving before he reached black belt. At the 1996 IBJJF World Championship, competing at purple belt, he captured double gold by winning both the weight division and the absolute — a result that announced him as one of the most dangerous competitors of his generation. He followed this with a brown belt weight division title at the 1997 IBJJF World Championship, cementing his reputation as a consistent performer at the sport's highest level.

The Schembri Fight: A Defining Moment

Atalla's first black belt match came against Nino Schembri, a widely respected competitor who had dominated his division for several years. The contest proved to be one of the defining moments of Atalla's competitive identity. He broke Schembri's celebrated submission streak and came close to finishing the fight himself with a tight leg lock. Although Atalla lost the match by three points — the result of a guard pass — the physical toll on Schembri was significant enough that he could not continue in the tournament. The performance drew considerable attention and signalled that Atalla belonged at the highest level of black belt competition.

A Career of Consistent Results

In 1998, Atalla claimed the Rio de Janeiro State Championship at brown belt. After receiving his black belt, he earned silver at the 1999 IBJJF World Championship, silver medals at both the 1999 and 2000 Pan American Championships, and a silver medal at the 1999 Brazilian National Championship. In 2003, he added the British Grappling Championship to his record. In 2007, Atalla returned to the podium at the European Championship, winning gold in the black belt Master 1 weight division — a testament to a competitive fire that never dimmed.

Relocating to Europe

Shortly after earning his black belt in 1998, Atalla made the bold decision to relocate to Europe — a continent where he had no established contacts and where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu had yet to take deep root. He settled first in England, where his familiarity with the language allowed him to build a following through seminars and consistent instruction. After a brief period in the Netherlands, it was Poland that captured both his attention and his loyalty. The warmth of the Polish people and a genuine connection to the country led him to settle there permanently.

Founding Rio Grappling Club

Atalla founded Rio Grappling Club as a deliberate tribute to the Rio Jiu-Jitsu Club where he had trained and grown as a fighter in Brazil. The name carried personal meaning — a bridge between his roots and his new home. The structure of the club was shaped by his own experiences with the internal politics of larger BJJ organisations. Atalla built a team that operated outside those structures, prioritising a training environment free from the friction he had encountered within more prominent affiliations. Roberto Atalla represents Poland in competition, a reflection of the genuine bond he developed with his adopted country. Rio Grappling Club has grown into a well-established European team, with affiliated fighters and academies spread across the continent.
