Mario Sergio Yokoyama's martial arts journey began on the Judo mat, where he forged the grappling sensibilities that would define his entire career. Immersed in throws, grips, and mat pressure, he developed a sharp understanding of leverage and body control that laid the groundwork for everything that followed — a foundation reinforced by his eventual promotion to Judo black belt.

At age 14, Yokoyama sought out a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school with clear purpose: to sharpen his ground game. His first BJJ coach was Roberto Lage, one of the earliest black belts to emerge from São Paulo and a pivotal figure in the development of BJJ in the region. Roberto Lage is also the father of Patricia Lage, who earned her black belt in 1995 at approximately 18 years of age — making her one of the youngest women to reach that rank at the time. Under Lage's instruction, Yokoyama advanced steadily through the early ranks, earning his purple belt directly under his mentor. The combination of a Judo black belt and BJJ training under one of São Paulo's pioneering instructors gave Yokoyama a technically diverse and well-rounded grappling base from the very start.

After earning his purple belt under Roberto Lage, Yokoyama made a pivotal move — relocating his training to the Gracie family camp. It was there that Rickson Gracie, one of the most storied and respected figures in BJJ history, promoted him to brown belt. Training under Rickson went far beyond a rank advancement; it was an immersive period that sharpened Yokoyama's technical precision and deepened his grasp of the art's foundational principles.

The final step in his black belt journey came on April 27, 2006, when Ryan Gracie promoted Yokoyama to black belt — cementing a close and lasting association with the Ryan Gracie lineage. His progression through three distinct mentors — Roberto Lage, Rickson Gracie, and Ryan Gracie — reflects an unusually rich exposure to some of BJJ's most respected instructors, each contributing a distinct layer to his game and philosophy on the mat.

In 2004, Yokoyama relocated from Brazil to Australia — a move shaped in large part by family, as his wife is Australian. Notably, the move preceded his black belt promotion, underscoring his commitment to establishing the Ryan Gracie presence in the region even while his own belt journey was still unfolding.

Establishing the Ryan Gracie Association in Oceania

Once settled in Australia, Yokoyama founded a Ryan Gracie affiliate school and took on the role of primary representative of the Ryan Gracie association across the entire Oceania region. His academy became the operational headquarters for the Ryan Gracie team in Oceania — a significant responsibility within one of BJJ's most prestigious lineages. The school represented both a personal endeavor and a deliberate effort to grow the sport in a region where BJJ infrastructure was still taking shape.

Competitive Credentials Behind the Coaching Role

Yokoyama brought genuine competitive experience to his work as a coach and representative. In 2002, he competed at Deep in Japan, gaining international MMA exposure that broadened his perspective as a martial artist. His background also includes competition at the South-East Brazilian Championship level, where he demonstrated the competitive caliber that preceded his transition into building and leading a school. As a Judo black belt, a competitor across both BJJ and MMA, and a product of the Gracie family system, Yokoyama established himself as a credible and well-rounded ambassador for the art in Australia.
