Laercio Fernandes

Laercio Fernandes was born on December 28, 1981, in Osasco, São Paulo, Brazil. His childhood unfolded against a backdrop of street violence, turbulent football pitches, and a neighbourhood drug culture that had already claimed many of his peers. Recognising the risks this environment posed, his family made a decisive intervention — enrolling young Laercio at a local sporting club called SESI, redirecting his combative energy into something purposeful.

It was there, on March 3, 1993, that Laercio first stepped onto a BJJ mat under the guidance of coach Arlans Maia Medeiros. The Jiu-Jitsu taught at SESI bore little resemblance to the sport-focused game being refined in Rio de Janeiro at the time. Rooted in an "old school" philosophy heavily influenced by Vale Tudo, training sessions regularly incorporated punches and kicks — forging in Laercio a raw, combative foundation that would define his approach to the art. It was also during these formative years at SESI that he first encountered Givanildo Santana, then a fellow white belt, who would later become his long-term master and one of the most consequential figures in his BJJ life.

Laercio's development took a pivotal turn when Arlans Maia Medeiros was reassigned to Rio de Janeiro due to military obligations. Before departing, Arlans promoted Givanildo Santana — known throughout the BJJ world as "The Arm Collector" — to purple belt and entrusted him with leading the class. At that point, Laercio held a yellow belt, and the change in leadership marked the beginning of a transformative chapter in his martial arts journey.

Under Giva Santana's tutelage, what had begun as a shared starting point between two beginners evolved into a lasting master-student partnership spanning decades. Santana's teaching philosophy and competitive mindset left a deep imprint on Laercio's approach to the art — sharpening his technical precision and instilling a relentless competitive drive. When Laercio eventually made the decision to relocate to the United States to pursue professional competition, he followed his master to Los Angeles, joining him at Team Oyama to train and compete at the highest level.

Few aspects of Laercio Fernandes's story are more telling than the discipline he demonstrated in pursuing BJJ alongside a full academic and professional life. Throughout his progression through the belt ranks, he studied full time and held steady employment — refusing to allow his education to suffer despite the relentless demands of training and competition. This was not a symbolic balance; it reflected a genuine commitment to building a complete life in which BJJ was central but never his only pursuit.

He earned his black belt while managing all of these parallel responsibilities, a testament to both his dedication to the art and his exceptional work ethic. Rather than stepping back from academia after his promotion, he intensified his studies and completed a Master's degree in Materials Engineering at a university in São Paulo, finishing the programme in 2009. With that milestone behind him, he turned his full professional focus toward competitive Jiu-Jitsu. During his years in São Paulo, Laercio trained at several respected academies — including Cia Paulista, Guigo, and Barbosa Team — each contributing meaningfully to his technical development and competitive preparation before his eventual move to the United States.

Laercio Fernandes competes in the Peso Pluma division at 64 kilograms (141 lbs), representing the United States internationally despite his Brazilian roots. His professional career, launched in earnest after completing his master's degree in 2009, wasted no time in proving that years of balancing study, work, and training had produced a competitor of serious calibre.

North American Dominance and Early Titles

His entry onto the professional circuit was immediate and emphatic. Laercio claimed back-to-back titles at the US Nationals in 2009 and 2010, establishing himself as a dominant force in his weight class across North America. That same year, he captured gold at the Honolulu Open while also earning a bronze medal in the open weight division at the same event — a clear signal of his competitive versatility. At the IBJJF World Championship in 2010, he reached the podium with a bronze medal, confirming his standing among the sport's elite.

World-Level Podiums and the European Title

Laercio's consistency across both gi and no-gi formats further distinguished his career. He earned a World No-Gi Silver Medal at the 2011 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, followed by a World No-Gi Bronze at the 2012 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship and a second-place finish at Pro League in 2012. The pinnacle of his competitive career arrived in 2013, when he claimed the title at the 2013 IBJJF European Championship — one of the most prestigious events on the IBJJF calendar. His relocation to Los Angeles to train full time under Giva Santana at Team Oyama proved instrumental in the sharpened preparation that fuelled his rise to consistent podium performances across the sport's most significant tournaments.
