Growing up near the ocean, Novaes threw himself into a wide range of sports: surfing, beach volleyball, football, cross country, and swimming. His introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu carried a distinctly familial quality — his brother served as his earliest training partner and gateway into the art. This family-rooted beginning laid a personal foundation for what would become a lifelong dedication to the sport.

After his initial training alongside his brother, Novaes came under the instruction of Adezil Souto, who guided him through his blue and purple belt promotions under the supervisory eye of Edvaldo Oliveira Maguila.
