James Quinlan

James Quinlan, known widely as Jimmy, was born in May 1986 in Methuen, Massachusetts. He took his first steps in combat sports at age nine, beginning a wrestling career that would shape the trajectory of his entire athletic life. Competing through his high school years, Quinlan established himself as a Massachusetts state finalist — an early signal of the competitive drive that would define him for decades to come.

In 2004, Quinlan joined the Bridgewater State wrestling team, where he remained through 2008 and served as a three-year captain. His collegiate career was remarkable by any measure: 137 wins total, including a standout 43-6 record during the 2006–2007 season. That same year, he set the single-season program record with 23 pins. By the time he graduated, Quinlan held the Bears' all-time records for both wins and pins — 69 pins in total — benchmarks that cemented his legacy at the institution.

After graduating in 2008, Quinlan joined the police force and found himself without a competitive sporting outlet for the first time in nearly two decades. A devoted fan of the UFC and its submission game, he was receptive when a close friend recommended a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym in nearby Acton. That recommendation proved to be a turning point. His first BJJ instructor was Nate Ryan, who would go on to award Quinlan every belt in his progression — from white all the way through black belt.

Throughout his entire BJJ journey, James Quinlan trained under a single instructor: Nate Ryan. That unbroken mentorship gave Quinlan a cohesive technical identity and a clear competitive arc as he advanced through the ranks.

Purple and Brown Belt Highlights

One of his earliest standout results came at purple belt, when Quinlan captured gold at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi in 2009 — a significant achievement at a stage where many competitors are still finding their footing on the international scene. It is worth noting that this title has sometimes been incorrectly attributed to the 2011 brown belt division; the correct record places the No-Gi Worlds victory in 2009 at purple belt.

At brown belt in 2011, Quinlan continued his ascent, claiming gold at both the IBJJF Pan Championship and the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi — a double that underscored his versatility across gi and no-gi formats alike.

Black Belt Promotion and Competition

On June 16, 2013, Nate Ryan promoted Quinlan to black belt, formalizing a journey that had taken him from complete beginner to elite-level competitor. Competing at black belt, Quinlan maintained an active presence on the regional and national IBJJF circuit. He won the IBJJF Boston Summer Open in 2016 and followed that with gold at the IBJJF Boston Spring Open in 2017. In 2022, he demonstrated that his competitive edge had not dulled, placing third at the IBJJF Masters World Championship in the Master 2 division and earning silver at the IBJJF New Haven Open — results that speak to a competitor who has remained consistent across multiple decades of grappling.

Long before James Quinlan ever stepped into a cage as a competitor, he was already embedded in Massachusetts' combat sports scene. Around 2006, while still a collegiate wrestler at Bridgewater State, Quinlan became a training partner for Joe Lauzon, one of the state's most prominent MMA figures. That relationship exposed him to many of New England's top fighters and allowed him to absorb the nuances of mixed martial arts from an early stage, even as his primary focus remained on wrestling.

Professional MMA and The Ultimate Fighter

After completing his collegiate career, Quinlan made his professional MMA debut in 2011. His performances attracted attention, and by late 2012 he had earned a spot on The Ultimate Fighter Season 17 — the edition coached by Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones, which brought significant visibility to its participants. Quinlan went on to compete in the UFC following his appearance on the show, gaining experience at the sport's highest level before being released from the roster in 2013.

Transition to Coaching

Rather than stepping away from combat sports entirely, his UFC release redirected Quinlan toward a role that would prove equally impactful. He transitioned into full-time coaching, joining Lauzon MMA in the Boston area as a Gi BJJ coach — a position that allowed him to channel his technical knowledge and competitive experience into developing the next generation of grapplers in New England.

In 2021, Quinlan relocated to New Hampshire and co-founded Blue Wave Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy alongside his wife, Dasha Quinlan. The academy represents the convergence of everything Quinlan has built across his career — the wrestling discipline developed over nearly two decades, the BJJ technical depth cultivated under Nate Ryan, the competitive experience gathered from regional opens to the world's most prominent no-gi championship stages, and the pedagogical instincts refined through years of coaching at every level.
