Emily Kwok

Emily Kwok was born in Aomori, Japan, and immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada with her family at just one and a half years of age. Growing up in Vancouver, she developed a deep passion for martial arts — one that would ultimately define the trajectory of her life. At age 16, she took her first concrete steps by pursuing Jeet Kune Do, only to be stopped by parents who believed martial arts were unsuitable for women.

Undeterred, Kwok returned to her martial arts aspirations at age 21. She initially gravitated toward boxing but struggled to connect with the sport and moved on. On a friend's recommendation, she turned to grappling, briefly exploring sambo for one month before discovering Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Her striking foundation was further enriched through her uncle — a well-known wing chun sifu originally from Hong Kong with a significant presence in Canada — who introduced her to wing chun and kickboxing. This eclectic early background would prove formative in shaping her approach to grappling and competition.

Emily Kwok's introduction to Brazilian jiu-jitsu came through her first coach, John Kefallonitus, a blue belt under Jean Jacques Machado at the time. From those early sessions, her development as a practitioner was shaped by an unusually diverse training environment — the direct result of her habit of traveling frequently between New York City, New Jersey, Vancouver, and Tokyo throughout her late teens and into adulthood.

This nomadic training lifestyle produced a belt progression as varied as it was distinguished. Kwok earned her blue belt under Renzo Gracie, her purple belt from Takashi Ouchi, and her brown and black belts from Ricardo Almeida, with her black belt awarded in December 2008. Far from representing fragmented development, this journey across multiple coaches and academies reflects Kwok's unwavering commitment to the art and her rare ability to absorb and synthesize instruction from some of the sport's most respected figures.

Emily Kwok's foray into mixed martial arts came through her Japanese connections in 2005, when she began competing in Smackgirl — a pioneering Japanese MMA organization that exclusively featured women's bouts at a time when women's MMA remained largely on the margins of combat sports. Competing in Smackgirl placed Kwok at the forefront of a movement that would eventually reshape the landscape of women's combat sports worldwide.

Kwok competed in the organization twice, winning both bouts and retiring with a perfect record of 2-0-0. Her brief but unblemished MMA career stands as a testament to her well-rounded martial arts foundation, and the Japanese roots that helped launch it remain a meaningful thread throughout her broader athletic identity.

Emily Kwok's emergence as one of the most important figures in women's Brazilian jiu-jitsu was built as much through her dedication to coaching and education as through her competitive achievements. She began teaching while still a purple belt, conducting her first women's-only class and establishing an early commitment to creating accessible, supportive training environments for women in the sport.

Kwok gained widespread recognition beyond competitive circles through her collaboration with Stephan Kesting on the "How to Defeat the Bigger Stronger Opponent" instructional series — a widely distributed resource that addressed one of the most practical challenges faced by smaller or less experienced grapplers. Her work through Groundswell Grappling Concepts further cemented her reputation as a leading ambassador for women's jiu-jitsu, providing a dedicated platform for bringing the sport to a broader audience.

In the fall of 2010, Kwok opened Princeton BJJ, her first gym, formalizing her dual role as educator and business owner within the BJJ community. Through competition, instruction, content creation, and gym ownership, Kwok carved out a legacy as a genuine pioneer for women in the sport.

The relationship between Emily Kwok and the Marcelo Garcia organization began with a chance encounter in 2007. After competing in the finals of the ADCC New Jersey trials, Kwok was waiting to board a flight to California when Tatiana Garcia approached her, introducing herself and her husband, Marcelo Garcia. Tatiana extended an open invitation to train at their academy, but Kwok declined — her team's policies did not permit students to train at outside affiliates.

Over the following two years, the two women continued to cross paths at grappling events. It was not until 2009, when Kwok was seeking a change of environment and a renewed sense of focus, that she finally accepted the invitation. The prospect of training alongside a female grappler of similar size was a significant draw. Commuting from New Jersey, Kwok endured two-hour one-way journeys to train at the Garcia academy — a commitment that spoke directly to the value she placed in the environment she found there.

By the spring of 2010, Kwok had formally joined the MGInAction training center as a student. That year, during a trip to California to support Marcelo Garcia at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, she developed a close connection with Josh Waitzkin, a co-founder of the MGInAction platform. Through her relationships with Waitzkin, Tatiana, and Marcelo Garcia, Kwok was offered a position within the MGInAction project, becoming a featured instructor and contributor to the virtual academy and training database. She went on to balance her involvement with MGInAction alongside her consulting work, teaching responsibilities, and the operation of her BJJ businesses.
