His grandfather, Alcides Góes — a judo expert — introduced him to martial arts as a toddler, instilling discipline and a deep love of combat sports from the earliest age. As his grandfather aged and could no longer provide formal instruction, Góes sought training wherever he could find it, eventually landing at the "Radar" academy in Copacabana. There, master Manimal offered free Jiu-Jitsu classes at 4am — the only no-cost option available in the neighborhood.

The story's conclusion, however, speaks more to Góes's character than to any lingering enmity. Years later, in Buffalo, New York, Góes encountered the very same Eugenio Tadeu and Hugo Duarte — both stranded in an unfamiliar American city with no knowledge of English and no local support network. Rather than seize the opportunity for retribution, Góes chose to help them, guiding the pair through their time in the US and going so far as to corner them in their MMA bouts. It was a remarkable display of generosity from a man who had every reason to turn his back.

Góes attended the event in a cornering capacity, working alongside his friend and compatriot Joe Moreira, when an altercation broke out between him and Abbott — one of the UFC's most feared and deliberately provocative personalities of the mid-1990s.

The confrontation did not resolve itself at the event. The following day, Abbott arrived at the fighters' hotel lobby with additional team members, intent on escalating the situation further.
