Alexandre Freitas was born on September 9, 1972, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An active and adventurous child, he developed a deep passion for surfing — a pursuit that reflected the physical instincts and competitive drive that would later define his approach to martial arts. In 1988, inspired by his brother's involvement in the sport, Freitas stepped onto the mats for the first time and began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

His foundational instruction came under Jean Jacques Machado, with whom he trained at Gracie Barra. When Machado relocated to the United States, Carlos Gracie Junior stepped in to guide Freitas's development, ensuring continuity within the Gracie Barra tradition. That lineage shaped every dimension of his game, and in 1994 Freitas earned his black belt — the formal beginning of what would become a distinguished career in both competition and coaching.

Through the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, Alexandre Freitas established himself as the undisputed king of BJJ's super-featherweight division. His technical precision and competitive consistency elevated him to the pinnacle of the sport across both gi and submission wrestling formats.

His rise began in earnest in 1993, when he claimed his division at the prestigious "Desafio Renzo vs Wallid" event — an early signal that a major talent had arrived. He followed that performance with the Brazilian National Championship title in 1996, cementing his standing among Brazil's elite grapplers. His dominance reached the international stage when he captured the ADCC World Championship in 1998 at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club tournament, one of the most coveted titles in submission wrestling. He returned to the ADCC in consecutive years, earning silver medals in both 1999 and 2000 — a sustained level of excellence at the sport's highest stage that few competitors could match.

Freitas's gi credentials proved equally formidable. A Brazilian National silver medal in 1999 and the Pan American Championship title in 2000 reinforced his dominance across formats and rule sets. Competing across multiple weight divisions — including Pluma, Pena, and Leve — he demonstrated the adaptability and technical depth that defined his competitive identity.

Freitas's competitive fire never faded with the passage of time. In 2008, more than a decade after his first major titles, he captured the Pan American No-Gi Championship in the Senior 1 division — a result that spoke to both his exceptional physical conditioning and his enduring technical mastery. Remaining competitive across gi and no-gi formats well into the later stages of his athletic career, Freitas embodied the discipline and dedication that had characterized his approach from the very beginning.

In 2004, Freitas made his mixed martial arts debut against Yoshiro Maeda, bringing an elite grappling base into the MMA arena. The transition was a natural extension of the submission wrestling expertise he had honed through years of ADCC competition, where no-gi grappling and finishing ability had long been central to his game. His foray into MMA added another dimension to an already multifaceted athletic career, reflecting the versatility of a grappler who had consistently tested himself across the full spectrum of combat sports.

In 2005, Freitas relocated to Long Island, New York, to pursue a full-time career in coaching. Drawing on his deep roots in the Gracie Barra tradition and his wealth of competitive experience, he founded Soca BJJ — an academy that has grown into a respected institution on the East Coast and has produced multiple black belts under his guidance.

Prior to his move to the United States, Freitas played a meaningful role in developing several grapplers in Brazil. Among them was Kyra Gracie, whom he coached through her purple belt before she transitioned to Gracie Barra headquarters to train under Carlos Gracie Junior in preparation for her black belt. Soca BJJ continues to reflect Freitas's philosophy of high-level technical instruction rooted in the Gracie Barra lineage, standing as a lasting contribution to the growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the northeastern United States.
