About this match
In the main event of UFC BJJ 11, Mikey Musumeci welcomed UFC featherweight Bryce Mitchell to the Bowl in a match that went the full distance to the judges' scorecards. Musumeci had agreed not to use leglock submissions, but he used leglocks throughout to sweep and improve position. His first use of the hold drew boos from the Meta APEX crowd, who initially believed he had broken his pre-match promise. The action settled into Musumeci's guard, where Mitchell applied heavy top pressure. Musumeci used another leglock to sweep into a better position, with Mitchell visibly unsure whether to fully engage. From there, Musumeci locked up a D'Arce choke that had Mitchell wheezing, but Mitchell escaped. Musumeci quickly transitioned to a guillotine attempt, which Mitchell also escaped. As the 10-second clapper sounded, Musumeci used the slope of the Bowl to execute an arm-drag takedown just before the horn.
The second round started with Mitchell ignoring Musumeci's low-five as he stalked Musumeci around the Bowl. Once the action went to the mat, another leglock gave Musumeci the opportunity to improve position and go on the attack. Mitchell stayed composed, defended well, and returned to Musumeci's guard. Musumeci pushed for a finish late in the round, but Mitchell did enough to prevent him from isolating an arm, and the round went to the scorecards.
Mitchell went on the attack at the start of Round 3, rubbing his head into Musumeci's face. After referee Vitor Ribeiro separated the pair, Musumeci launched into a flying triangle attempt, only to be power slammed into the mat by Mitchell. As the round wore on, Musumeci took control and, following instructions from his teammate William Tackett, he found Mitchell's back. Musumeci secured a body triangle to control Mitchell's position and looked for a rear-naked choke. Mitchell defended, and Musumeci transitioned to an armbar, but Mitchell stayed compact to prevent the extension. With Mitchell's cornerman Sean Strickland bantering with Musumeci and the crowd, Mitchell charged in to force Musumeci to the mat in the closing seconds. After 15 minutes of back-and-forth grappling, all three judges sided with Musumeci.
