Key principles
- · The kimura grip stays locked through the entire transition — the leg replaces the finishing torque, not the control.
- · Your leg must cross over the trapped shoulder, not the head: the shin or calf pressing the shoulder line is what multiplies the rotation.
- · Sitting your weight down through the draped leg finishes the lock with the hip, so the tap comes from body weight rather than arm strength.
- · It converts stalled kimuras: when they grab their own belt or leg to defend, the leg-over torque breaks the grip chain the arms alone could not.
- · The angle mirrors an omoplata — if they roll to relieve the shoulder, follow the roll and re-seat the grip; the sweep is the consolation prize.
Execution
- 1 Establish a kimura grip on the bent arm, from guard or from a top kimura position.
- 2 Angle your body toward the trapped arm and swing your same-side leg over their shoulder, draping it across the shoulder line.
- 3 Keep their wrist pinned toward their back as the leg lands — the loop must stay closed.
- 4 Sit your weight into the draped leg while lifting slightly with the grip, rotating the shoulder past its range.
- 5 If they roll to escape, follow and re-anchor, or take the sweep and finish on top.
Common mistakes
- × Releasing or loosening the kimura grip while swinging the leg over, giving back the arm at the exact moment control matters most.
- × Laying the leg across their head or neck instead of the shoulder, which cranks nothing and lets them posture through.
- × Trying to finish flat on your back instead of curling around the shoulder — without the angle, the rotation stops at their elbow instead of their shoulder.
