Electric Chair
Submission
Also known as:
Electric Chair Submission
The Electric Chair is a groin and hamstring submission performed from the dogfight position, typically reached via the lockdown. The attacker threads an arm under the opponent's trapped leg and uses full-body extension to split the legs apart, attacking the groin and inner thigh. It is highly effective in both gi and no-gi and also serves as a sweep entry and gateway to the Twister or Banana Split.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The lockdown on the opponent's leg is essential to control and isolate the far leg before transitioning to the submission.
- · Threading your underhook arm deep under the opponent's far thigh creates the lever needed to split the legs.
- · Power comes from extending your hips and arching your back, not from pulling with your arms alone.
- · Keeping your head tight against the opponent's hip prevents them from creating space or re-squaring their hips.
- · If the opponent tries to roll or posture away, follow their momentum to transition to Twister or Banana Split entries.
Execution
- 1 From dogfight with the lockdown secured on the opponent's near leg, shoot your underhook arm deep under their far thigh, clasping your hands together around that leg.
- 2 Release the lockdown and shift to a butterfly-style hook or simply free your legs while maintaining the grip under the far leg.
- 3 Sit back and fall to your shoulder on the underhook side, pulling the opponent's far leg across your chest.
- 4 Extend your hips upward and outward while pulling the trapped leg toward your head, splitting the opponent's legs apart to finish the submission.
Common mistakes
- × Failing to thread the underhook arm deep enough under the far thigh, resulting in a shallow grip that allows the opponent to free their leg and recover.
- × Trying to finish by pulling with the arms instead of driving with hip extension, which lacks the power to overcome resistance and fatigues the grip.
- × Releasing the lockdown too early before securing the arm grip under the thigh, giving the opponent a window to escape the dogfight and flatten you.
