Dead Orchard

Submission

The dead orchard is the finishing series Nathan Orchard built out of his dead orchard control: with your legs figure-foured behind the opponent's shoulder and both of their arms trapped inside, the double armbar, americana, and wristlock finish limbs that have no post, frame, or exit. It punishes the both-arms-in posture that defeats most other guard offense.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The control does the submission's work: by the time you attack, both arms are already isolated — the finishes are selections, not scrambles.
  • · The double armbar is the centerline option: both of their forearms extend together against your hips with nowhere to rotate.
  • · Rotation defenses feed the flanks — an arm that turns thumb-up meets the americana, one that folds meets the wristlock.
  • · Small extensions finish it; trapped arms have no slack, so the tap arrives within inches.
  • · If the arms somehow pull free, the guard is still yours — the dead orchard risks nothing positional.

Execution

  1. 1 Establish dead orchard control: legs figure-foured behind one shoulder, both of their arms enclosed.
  2. 2 Square their forearms against your hip line for the double armbar and extend gradually.
  3. 3 If an arm rotates out of the double attack, catch it in the americana as the elbow turns.
  4. 4 If it folds instead, take the wristlock against the compressed joint.
  5. 5 Keep the leg lock sealed through every branch — the enclosure is the submission.

Common mistakes

  • × Attacking before the figure-four truly encloses both arms, turning a mechanical finish into a grip scramble.
  • × Extending explosively against trapped elbows instead of applying in increments — the position gives no warning distance.
  • × Fixating on the double armbar while their rotating arm has already offered the americana.
