Dead Orchard Control

Position

Dead orchard control is Nathan Orchard's high-guard configuration in the 10th Planet system, built for the moment an opponent defends rubber guard by hiding both arms inside: your legs figure-four behind one of their shoulders, trapping that shoulder in a triangle-like leg lock with both of their arms caught in the enclosure. From this control the double armbar, americana, and wristlock series attack limbs that can no longer post or pull free.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · It answers the both-arms-in defense: the posture that shuts down standard rubber guard entries is exactly the shape the dead orchard swallows.
  • · The figure-four locks behind their shoulder, not their head — the shoulder line is what pins both arms inside your structure.
  • · Their arms are guests in your house: everything they do with trapped arms — framing, gripping, pulling — feeds a joint lock.
  • · Weight hangs off the locked shoulder to keep them folded; posture is broken by the geometry, not by pulling.
  • · The finishing tree is arm-focused by design: double armbar down the middle, americana and wristlock as they rotate to escape.

Execution

  1. 1 From closed or rubber guard, as they tuck both arms inside to defend, climb your legs high on one side.
  2. 2 Figure-four your legs behind that shoulder, enclosing both of their arms inside the lock.
  3. 3 Settle the lock's weight to keep their posture folded into you.
  4. 4 Isolate the arms: attack the double armbar through the centerline first.
  5. 5 As they twist to defend, follow with the americana and wristlock series on whichever arm turns.

Common mistakes

  • × Locking the figure-four across the head or neck, which becomes a strained crank instead of shoulder-line control.
  • × Letting one of their arms slip outside the enclosure, converting the dead orchard back into ordinary guard with tired hips.
  • × Attacking one wrist while ignoring the other arm's rebuilding frame — the position's gift is both arms, so account for both.
