Open Closed Guard

Transition
Also known as:
Guard Opening Sequence

Opening the closed guard is a fundamental transition where the top player breaks the bottom player's leg lock around their waist to advance into open guard passing positions or combat base. It is used whenever you are trapped inside closed guard and need to create space to begin passing.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · Posture is the prerequisite—you cannot open the guard if you are broken down, so establish strong upright posture first.
  • · Hands controlling the hips or biceps prevent the bottom player from re-closing or attacking as you open.
  • · Standing up shifts your center of gravity above theirs, making their ankle lock mechanically weak.
  • · One knee pressing into the tailbone or inner thigh creates a wedge that pries the legs apart.
  • · Anticipate the bottom player pulling you back down or transitioning to open guard attacks the moment their feet unlock.

Execution

  1. 1 Establish posture by placing both hands on the bottom player's torso or hips, straightening your spine, and driving your weight slightly forward into their hips.
  2. 2 Pin one hand on their hip and use the other to grip their same-side knee or pants, then step one foot up flat on the mat near their hip (standing in base).
  3. 3 Stand to both feet while maintaining grips on their hips or legs, keeping your base wide and posture tall so their ankles begin to separate.
  4. 4 Once their feet unlock, use your knee or elbow to wedge between their legs and immediately push one leg to the mat while stepping back into combat base or initiating a pass.

Common mistakes

  • × Trying to pry the guard open from the knees without standing, which lets the bottom player maintain hip control and re-close easily.
  • × Leaning forward while standing up, which collapses posture and allows the bottom player to pull you back into a broken-down position or set up sweeps.
  • × Unlocking the feet but failing to immediately control a leg, giving the bottom player time to establish dangerous open guard hooks or grips.
