Steffen Banta

Steffen Banta was born on September 3, 1999, in Fort Worth, Texas, and grew up across both Fort Worth and Dallas. His path to becoming a professional grappler began in an unlikely arena: competitive dance. As a high schooler, Banta first channeled his competitive instincts into Lindy Hop and Ballroom Dancing — a discipline demanding rhythm, body awareness, and spatial control that, in retrospect, laid subtle groundwork for the mat-based career that followed.

The pivot toward martial arts was sparked by a period of bullying at school. Banta's father — himself a judo black belt — encouraged his son to pursue combat sports as a means of building self-confidence. Acting on that advice, Banta began wrestling at 16, spending a semester competing at the scholastic level. The following year, he discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and found an immediate, lasting connection with the sport.

Banta's first steps on the BJJ mats were guided by Márcio Santos of Machado BJJ, where he earned his blue belt. While the instruction was technically sound, Banta recognized early that the academy's culture catered to recreational practitioners rather than serious competitors. Driven by the desire to compete frequently and at a high level, he made the deliberate decision to seek a more competition-focused environment.

At 18, Banta joined the gym of Marcus Antelante, affiliated with Soul Fighters. It was through that connection that he first encountered João Gabriel Rocha, one of the central figures of the Soul Fighters professional squad — an introduction that would prove to be the defining relationship of his career.

Breaking Into the Elite Room

While training under Antelante, Banta learned of an invitation-only professional training group that convened at the Lonestar Pro Training Center. The sessions were restricted to brown and black belts and drew some of the sport's most accomplished athletes, including Rafael Formiga, Pedro Henrique Rocha, Manuel Ribamar, Nathiely de Jesus, Igor Paiva, and João Gabriel Rocha. Undeterred by the entry requirements, Banta showed up ready to train. Initially turned away, he pressed his case and was permitted to participate in sparring.

Rocha's original intention was straightforward: subject the young blue belt to enough punishment that he would choose not to return. The strategy produced the opposite effect. Banta absorbed the hard sessions and kept coming back, eventually earning a permanent place in the room. From that point forward, he maintained a dual training schedule — working with João Gabriel Rocha during morning professional sessions and with Marcus Antelante during evening classes.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 fractured the Soul Fighters organization from within. Team management split, and the roster dispersed in different directions — João Gabriel Rocha and Rafael Formiga went on to found Double Five, while Marcus Antelante aligned with Ares. The dissolution placed Banta, loyal to both primary coaches, in a difficult position.

Faced with the need to choose, Banta followed João Gabriel Rocha — first to Double Five and later to Alliance. The decision reflected the depth of a mentor-student bond forged the moment a teenage blue belt talked his way into an elite training room and refused to leave. Banta represents Alliance.

Blue Belt

Across three belt levels, Banta assembled one of the most decorated pre-black belt competition records of his generation. At blue belt, he captured the IBJJF World Championship in the gi in 2017 and claimed no-gi world titles in both 2017 and 2018. He added the IBJJF Pan Championship in the gi in 2019 and in no-gi in 2018, establishing himself as a consistent front-runner on the international circuit.

Purple Belt

At purple belt, Banta sustained his momentum by taking gold at the IBJJF American Nationals in both gi and no-gi formats in 2020, demonstrating that his competitive edge carried cleanly through the transition to the intermediate ranks.

Brown Belt

The brown belt chapter of his career was the most complete of all. In 2022, Banta won the IBJJF World Championship in both gi and no-gi, took gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship in both formats, claimed the European Open no-gi title, and swept the American Nationals in gi and no-gi — all within the same calendar year. His performance at the 2022 No-Gi Worlds, where he finished as a double gold medalist, earned him the year-end distinction of IBJJF No. 1 Ranked Brown Belt in No-Gi for 2022. By the time his colored belt career concluded, Banta had accumulated a title collection that few competitors at any level could match.

On December 17, 2022, João Gabriel Rocha promoted Banta to the rank of black belt — a milestone that carried significance well beyond a single athlete's advancement. Banta became only the second person ever to receive a black belt directly from Rocha. The first was Pedro Henrique Rocha, João Gabriel's brother, placing Banta within an exceptionally short and select lineage under one of the sport's most accomplished competitors.

The promotion was the culmination of a journey that began years earlier when a teenage blue belt talked his way into an invitation-only training room and refused to leave despite every incentive to do so. The years of consistent presence alongside elite practitioners, the dual training regimen under Rocha and Antelante, and the relentless competitive output across three belt levels all converged in the moment Rocha tied the black belt around Banta's waist.

In February 2023, Banta made his black belt debut at the Oklahoma Open, and the transition from decorated colored belt competitor to black belt contender appeared seamless. He won both gi division matches by submission via armbar — a finishing rate consistent with the aggressive, submission-oriented style he had refined across his entire colored belt career.

The Oklahoma Open also served as a showcase for the bonds forged through years of shared training. Banta closed out the gi division alongside training partner Davi Cabral, and closed out the no-gi division alongside mentor João Gabriel Rocha — a fitting image of the team dynamic that had shaped his development from the very beginning.
