His father, Belmiro Valverde, a Judo black belt, recognized his son's potential early and began teaching him Judo at the age of four. That foundational immersion in grappling arts — emphasizing balance, timing, and physical control — would shape the technical and competitive identity Valverde carried throughout his career.

His development as a judoka was remarkably swift. Valverde earned his Judo black belt at 19 years old in 1995, a milestone that reflected both natural aptitude and the discipline instilled by his father. His regional dominance was equally striking — he claimed the Bahia State Judo Championship every year from 1991 through 2000, a decade-long grip on the title that established him as the preeminent judoka in the state. That sustained regional excellence extended to the national and international stages: a 1st place finish at the Brazilian University Championship in 1997, gold at the New York Judo Open in 1998, and victory in the Brazil vs. Mexico Challenge in 1999.

In 1991 — the same year his Bahia State Judo Championship streak began — Valverde took his first steps in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, joining Academia Shiozawa under the guidance of Mestre Serrinha.
