Sergio Benini

Sergio Benini's path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in the stands, drawn in by the early events of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Among the performances that captivated him most were those of Royce Gracie, whose dominance across multiple weight classes and fighting styles delivered a masterclass in Gracie jiu-jitsu as a martial discipline. That early fascination would grow into a lifelong commitment to the art.

By 1999, at the age of 18, Benini took his first concrete step onto the mats by joining the academy of Danilo Manoel, a practitioner whose lineage ran directly through Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhães — the head of the Gracie Barra franchise in Belo Horizonte. This connection placed Benini within one of Brazil's most established BJJ institutions from the outset. He structured his early training around a dual schedule, attending Draculino's day classes at the Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte headquarters while training under Danilo during evening sessions. This demanding routine reflected the seriousness with which Benini approached his development from the very beginning.

Benini's technical aptitude distinguished him early within the Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte environment, earning recognition as one of Draculino's most capable and perceptive students. That recognition translated into responsibility: in 2003, while still a purple belt, Benini was brought on as an assistant coach at the academy — a role that reflected both the trust his instructor placed in him and the maturity of his technical understanding at a relatively early stage in his training.

His competitive record reinforced this standing. In 2002, Benini captured the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship title at blue belt and contributed to the Brazilian National Team Championship-winning side that same year. He carried that momentum through his purple belt years, earning additional Brazilian National Team Championship titles in 2003 and 2005 across the Peso Leve/Médio weight divisions — a consistent competitive output that ran parallel to his growing responsibilities as a coach.

On December 21, 2007, Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhães promoted Benini to the rank of black belt, formally recognizing nearly a decade of dedicated training, teaching, and competition within the Gracie Barra system.

Benini's transition into black belt competition made clear that his earlier results were no anomaly. In 2012, he placed third at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro Trials, signaling his intent to compete at the highest international levels of the sport. The following year, he reached the final of the IBJJF São Paulo International Open at black belt, adding another notable result to his record.

The 2014 UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro Championship represented his most prominent international appearance. Advancing to the final and finishing as runner-up, Benini placed himself firmly among the elite competitors in his weight division on the world stage. His competitive output continued through the mid-2010s with a runner-up finish at the CBJJ Brazilian National Team Championship in 2015, before one of the most productive stretches of his black belt career arrived in 2016. That year, Benini claimed double gold at the IBJJF Belo Horizonte International Open, winning both the Gi and No-Gi titles, then capped the year with a CBJJ Brazilian National Team Championship at black belt — a title that underscored his sustained ability to perform at the top level more than a decade after earning his first national recognition as a blue belt.

Benini's identity within Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte has never been defined solely by competition. Long before assuming formal leadership responsibilities, he served as a regular instructor at the Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte headquarters, shaping numerous athletes who went on to compete at high levels. His coaching presence became a defining element of GB-BH's continued success.

In 2015, with Draculino and Marcelo Azevedo relocating to the United States, Benini stepped into co-leadership of the main academy alongside Claudio "Caloquinha" Matos. Together, they assumed stewardship of one of Brazil's most historically significant Gracie Barra affiliates at a pivotal moment, and the continuity they provided preserved the academy's competitive and technical standards through the transition.

In early 2017, Benini, Caloquinha, and Draculino jointly inaugurated a new, expanded Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte facility, marking a new chapter in the academy's development. With Benini and Claudio "Caloquinha" Matos directing day-to-day operations, the new facility carries forward the competitive tradition and coaching philosophy built over decades under Draculino's guidance.
