Moacir Mendes Jr

Moacir Mendes Júnior was born on January 23, 1981, in Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, and grew up in the neighbouring town of Canoas. His path to the martial arts began not through competitive ambition but medical necessity — during infancy, Moacir developed asthmatic bronchitis, and his pediatric doctor recommended sport as a means of improving his respiratory condition. At just four years old, he pulled on his first gi and stepped onto a judo mat.

What began as a health intervention quickly became the defining thread of his life. Judo consumed Moacir's daily routine, and his natural aptitude for the sport surfaced early. By 17, his talent had attracted national selectors, earning him a place in the Brazilian National Judo Squad — a position he held for the next 15 years. He developed into a formidable stand-up judoka, building a technically refined throwing game that made him a consistent threat at the elite level. Yet he identified a critical gap in his competitive armoury: his newaza, or groundwork, lagged behind his tachi-waza, and that deficiency cost him important matches at the highest level of competition.

In 2000, Moacir moved to address his groundwork shortcomings directly. Encouraged by his close friend Flávio Canto — a judo Olympian and BJJ black belt — he enrolled at a jiu-jitsu school and began from the white belt, bringing the same humility and work ethic that had carried him to the top of judo.

His first BJJ coach was the legendary José Mario Sperry, under whom he trained at the Sul Jiu Jitsu club in Porto Alegre. He worked through the fundamentals under Sperry's guidance, progressing to blue belt before transitioning to the academy of Mário Reis — a two-time IBJJF black belt world champion and close personal friend — who guided him through the remainder of his belt journey. Both coaches left a lasting imprint on his technical development and his understanding of grappling as a complete discipline.

Building Toward the Black Belt

By 2005, Moacir — then a brown belt under Mário Reis — had begun integrating BJJ instruction into his coaching work, building on years of teaching judo to children. Three years later, he earned his black belt in a ceremony of particular significance: the promotion took place on the podium of the CBJJE Jiu-Jitsu World Championship itself, the same event where he had claimed a bronze medal at brown belt in 2008. He returned to that stage to win the black belt division title at the CBJJE World Championship in 2010. Competing under the Alliance banner in Porto Alegre and representing Brazil throughout his career, Mendes assembled a competitive résumé that reflected the full depth of his cross-disciplinary grappling education.

Moacir Mendes Júnior occupies a rare position in combat sports: a competitor and coach who has operated at the highest levels of both judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu simultaneously. That dual expertise made him an exceptionally valuable asset to the Brazilian sporting establishment, and his work with elite BJJ athletes at Mário Reis' academy in Porto Alegre drew attention well beyond the regional scene.

Recognition and the Olympic Appointment

In 2012, the European platform Best Judo — one of the leading specialist outlets in the sport at the time — informally recognised him as the "Best Newaza Athlete in Judo," a distinction that reflected how profoundly his BJJ training had transformed his groundwork capabilities. The recognition signalled something broader: that deep BJJ knowledge, when properly transplanted into the judo context, could produce a qualitatively different level of ground competence.

That reputation led to a landmark appointment. Ahead of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, Moacir was brought in as the newaza coach for the Brazilian National Judo Squad, tasked with bringing the precision and conceptual depth of high-level BJJ to the ground game of Brazil's Olympic athletes — a pioneering integration of the two disciplines on the sport's largest stage. Among the BJJ athletes he coached during this period were Nicholas Meregali, Fábio Kamikaze, João Paulo Neto, and Monique Elias, each benefiting from his rare ability to synthesise the technical demands of both grappling arts.

The reputation Moacir built through his work on both sides of the judo-BJJ divide did not go unnoticed in the wider grappling world. In 2017, Rubens Charles — known universally as "Cobrinha," a two-time ADCC World champion and four-time IBJJF World champion — extended an invitation for Moacir to coach students at the Alliance Los Angeles base-camp.

Remote Instruction as Innovation

The logistical challenge was considerable: Mendes was based in Brazil with no plans to relocate. Rather than allow geography to obstruct the collaboration, both parties arrived at an innovative solution — weekly coaching sessions conducted via Skype video-call. At the time, structured remote instruction of this kind was genuinely novel in the BJJ world. That it functioned effectively for both Cobrinha's students and Mendes himself demonstrated not only the adaptability of the format but also the clarity and communicability of Moacir's technical instruction.

The partnership stands as a testament to his standing within the global BJJ community. That one of the sport's most decorated competitors sought out his expertise — and that the collaboration thrived across thousands of miles — underscores the degree to which Moacir Mendes Júnior established himself as a technical authority whose influence transcends both borders and disciplines.
