Outi Järvilehto

Outi Järvilehto was born on December 1, 1986, in Oulu, Finland, and developed her early athletic identity through competitive horse riding. Long before she set foot on a BJJ mat, equestrian sport had already instilled in her the focus, discipline, and competitive drive that would later define her martial arts career.

In 2007, Järvilehto relocated to Helsinki to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine. That same fall, she took her first steps in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under the instruction of Sammy Hämäläinen. From the outset, she balanced the rigorous demands of veterinary school with the physical and technical challenges of BJJ — a dual commitment that would become a defining hallmark of her life and career.

Järvilehto's path through the belt ranks reflects both her broad connections within the global BJJ community and the consistency of her competitive results. She began her training in Helsinki under Sammy Hämäläinen, earned her purple belt from Felipe Costa, and received her brown belt from Rodrigo Medeiros, widely known as "Comprido."

After graduating from university in 2012, she returned to Oulu and continued her development at Oulun Kamppailuklubi under coach Tuomas Tammilehto, a gym affiliated with Brasa Clube de Jiu Jitsu. Training within the Brasa system placed her alongside some of the sport's most accomplished figures and sharpened her game to an international standard.

On February 28, 2016, Demian Maia promoted Järvilehto to black belt — a recognition that followed her performance at the European Open Championship and marked the culmination of nearly a decade of competitive dedication. The promotion established her as one of Brasa Clube de Jiu Jitsu's leading representatives in Europe.

Järvilehto's competitive record places her among the most accomplished female grapplers to emerge from Scandinavia, with gold medals at every belt level against the world's best athletes.

Building the Foundation: Blue and Purple Belt

At blue belt, she captured gold at the European Open Championship in 2011, announcing herself as a serious force on the international circuit. She carried that momentum into purple belt, winning the IBJJF World Championship in 2014 — the most prestigious title in gi jiu-jitsu — and adding the European Open No-Gi Championship the same year.

Brown Belt and the World Championship Final

At brown belt, Järvilehto won the European Open No-Gi Championship in 2015 and the Finnish National Championship, while reaching the final of the World Championship that same year to claim silver — a result that foreshadowed things to come.

Black Belt Debut at the World Stage

The next chapter unfolded at the 2016 IBJJF World Championship, held just months after her black belt promotion. Competing in the adult female black belt rooster weight division, Järvilehto reached the final and earned a silver medal — a seamless transition that underscored the caliber of her game at the sport's highest level. Back-to-back World Championship final appearances, at brown belt in 2015 and black belt in 2016, speak to the durability and consistency that define her competitive identity.

Throughout her career, Järvilehto has competed across two weight divisions — Peso Galo (48kg/107lbs) and Pluma (53kg/118lbs) — demonstrating the versatility and physical discipline that characterize her approach to the sport.

Few figures in European BJJ balance elite-level competition with as demanding a professional life as Outi Järvilehto. After completing her veterinary degree in 2012, she built a career as a full-time veterinarian with a specialization in dental surgery — a field that demands the same precision, patience, and years of dedicated study that high-level jiu-jitsu requires.

Rather than pursuing BJJ as a full-time athletic endeavor, Järvilehto has consistently proven that championship-level performance is achievable alongside a rigorous professional vocation. International titles, World Championship podium finishes, and a thriving career in veterinary medicine — that combination makes her one of the most distinctive and inspiring figures in the European BJJ community.
