Marcus Antelante

Marcus Antelante's journey to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was neither linear nor predictable. Born on May 16, 1984, in Brazil, he first encountered martial arts as a child through taekwondo — a path cut short when a suspension at age 8 sent him away from the sport entirely. That early exit, however, planted the seed for a deeper and more enduring relationship with combat sports.

Six years later, Antelante returned to training through luta livre esportiva (LLE), a Brazilian catch wrestling discipline with strong roots in the country's grappling culture. The experience gave him an early foundation in ground-based combat and a tactical appreciation for positional control — attributes that translated directly into his development as a jiu-jitsu practitioner. Shortly after his introduction to LLE, he committed fully to BJJ and began building the technical base that would define his competitive career.

His most formative early influence was André Terêncio, one of Brazil's most respected BJJ instructors, operating out of the Tijuca area of Rio de Janeiro. Under Terêncio's guidance, Antelante developed a disciplined, methodical game and progressed steadily through the ranks from white belt to brown belt. That relationship laid the technical and philosophical groundwork for everything that followed.

Upon reaching brown belt, Antelante made a defining career decision: he joined Soul Fighters, one of Brazil's most prominent and internationally active BJJ academies. The move placed him under the mentorship of Rafael Barbosa, widely known as "Formiga" — a highly respected figure within Soul Fighters and one of the organization's most accomplished coaches and competitors.

Formiga's influence extended well beyond technical instruction. The mentorship opened pathways to international competition and created the opportunity for Antelante to step into a coaching role abroad. Under Formiga's direction, Antelante earned his black belt, marking the culmination of years of disciplined progression that began under André Terêncio and reached its fullest expression within the Soul Fighters system.

First Steps in the United States

Antelante's connection to North America began in 2010, when he traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to serve as a substitute coach at American Top Team's Atlanta location. Stepping in for Roan Carneiro — known as "Jucao" — in the months following competition appearances at the IBJJF Pan American and World Championships, Antelante gained his first meaningful experience coaching on American soil, a preview of the permanent chapter that would follow.

Relocating and Establishing Soul Fighters DFW

In 2011, Antelante returned to the US to compete at the IBJJF World Championships, preparing at Caio Terra's training camp in California. That trip proved transformative beyond the competition itself: at the camp, he connected with a gym owner seeking a high-level instructor to lead an academy in San Antonio, Texas. Antelante accepted the position and relocated to the United States with his wife Victoria.

Although the San Antonio venture was short-lived, Antelante quickly established new roots in Dallas, Texas, where he founded Soul Fighters DFW. The academy extended the Soul Fighters brand into the heart of the Lone Star State and became the platform from which he built his reputation as one of the most accomplished Masters division competitors on the IBJJF North American circuit.

Establishing Elite Status

From 2014 through 2018, Antelante positioned himself as one of the most formidable Master 1 competitors in the IBJJF system, competing in the Peso Médio division (82kg/181lbs). His results across both gi and no-gi formats reflected a well-rounded, technically precise game built for sustained success at the highest levels of Masters competition.

Peak Performance: 2015

The apex of Antelante's competitive career arrived in 2015, when he captured two of the most prestigious titles in his division: the IBJJF Pan American Championship and the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, both in the Master 1 category. Winning both in a single calendar year confirmed his standing among the elite grapplers of his generation in the Masters ranks. He further reinforced that dominance by claiming gold at the IBJJF American Nationals and the IBJJF Atlanta Winter Open that same year.

Sustained Excellence Across the Circuit

Antelante's consistency across the IBJJF circuit was a defining hallmark of his competitive identity. He added American Nationals titles in 2016, earned back-to-back victories at the IBJJF Houston International Open, and claimed gold at the IBJJF New York Pro in 2014 — results that demonstrated sustained excellence rather than isolated peaks. His versatility across gi and no-gi formats spoke directly to the well-rounded technical foundation that Soul Fighters training had instilled throughout his career.

In 2018, having transitioned primarily into a coaching role years after relocating to the United States, Antelante returned to elite competition and earned a third-place finish at the IBJJF World Masters Championship in the Master 1 division. The result stood as a testament to the durability of his skills and the lasting impact of his development under André Terêncio, Rafael Barbosa, and the Soul Fighters system.
