The turning point arrived when Marcos witnessed the inaugural UFC broadcast on television. Captivated by Royce Gracie's performances, he approached his father and asked to learn the techniques he had seen on screen. Master Adilson de Souza obliged, formally introducing an eight-year-old Marcos to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A Multigenerational Lineage Rooted in São Paulo

The de Souza family represents one of the more distinctive multigenerational BJJ lineages to emerge from São Paulo, with Adilson de Souza serving as the foundational figure who shaped the competitive identities of all his children. Marcos received every belt rank — white through black — exclusively under his father's instruction. His black belt was awarded in December 2004 by Master Adilson, completing a father-to-son lineage that carries particular significance within the BJJ community.

A Sibling Collective Built for Competition

The family's competitive reach extended well beyond Marcos alone. His siblings — brothers Mauricio Dai Souza and Roberto Satoshi de Souza, and sister Cristiane Yukari de Souza — all developed into serious practitioners under the same roof, forming a rare sibling collective capable of competing at high levels. Within this family circle, Marcos carries the nickname "Marquinhos" — meaning "little Marcos" — an affectionate label that reflects the close-knit, family-centered culture from which his BJJ identity grew. Mauricio Opens the Door

The de Souza family's Japanese chapter began in 2004, when Mauricio Dai Souza relocated to Yokohama seeking better living conditions. Attempting to continue his training at local academies, Mauricio found the doors largely closed — many instructors viewed his technical level as a competitive threat rather than an asset. Left with few alternatives, he made the pragmatic decision to open his own academy, initially with the modest goal of simply having training partners.

Marcos Announces His Arrival

In 2005, Mauricio funded his brother's flight from São Paulo to Japan to compete in a tournament offering substantial prize money. The gamble paid off decisively. Marcos submitted every opponent on his path to the final, where he faced Daisuke "Amazon" Sugie, regarded at the time as one of Japan's top competitors. Marcos submitted Sugie after establishing a 24-point lead — a performance that announced his arrival in the Japanese BJJ scene with unmistakable authority.

Building Bonsai BJJ from the Ground Up

Inspired by that debut, Marcos and younger brother Roberto Satoshi de Souza relocated to Japan in 2007, intent on building academies of their own and continuing the instructional path their father had walked before them. The early years were far from comfortable. To survive and accumulate capital, Marcos worked factory jobs during the week and served as a bouncer on nights and weekends. The financial grind was slow, but the brothers remained committed to their long-term vision. Their perseverance paid off: after pooling resources, they opened Bonsai BJJ, which grew to four branches across Japan — a remarkable entrepreneurial achievement in a market where BJJ had not yet established deep roots.

Establishing the Foundation in Brazil

Marcos de Souza established himself as the preeminent BJJ competitor in Asia during the late 2000s and into the 2010s, competing primarily in the Meio Pesado (88kg) and Pesado (94kg) weight divisions while representing Japan — a full reflection of his commitment to his adopted country. His Brazilian competitive record laid the early foundation. In 2005, he claimed gold at the CBJJO Brazilian National Cup and the FPJJ São Paulo State Championship, victories he repeated at the state level in 2006. That same year, he won the Rickson Gracie Cup, a prestigious title that signaled his potential before his Japan-based career truly took shape.

Dominating the Asian Circuit

Once established in Japan, Marcos' tournament dominance became consistent and wide-ranging. In 2008, he won the Newaza de Go, and in 2009 he claimed gold at the DEEP X 4 tournament. His 2009 season also produced absolute division titles at both the IBJJF Asian Open and the All-Japan Championship — two of the most important titles available in the region. The 2010 season brought his most complete campaign: he swept the weight and absolute divisions at the 2010 IBJJF Asian Open, the All-Japan Championship, and the DUMAU International, while also claiming the absolute title at the DUMAU Cup. That run of dominance across multiple major Japanese competitions cemented his standing at the top of Asian BJJ.

Throughout his competitive career, Marcos demonstrated a strong preference for submission-oriented grappling — a tendency on full display during his 2005 debut in Japan, when he finished every opponent en route to submitting Daisuke "Amazon" Sugie in the final.
