Karel Pravec was born in 1963 in Zlín, Czechoslovakia, and spent his formative years in Prague. The political climate of Soviet-controlled Eastern Europe shaped his early life in profound ways. In 1980, his father — a diplomat — publicly spoke out against Soviet rule, a courageous act that placed the family in immediate danger and forced them to flee the country. Karel was 17 years old when the Pravec family emigrated to the United States, leaving behind everything they had known in pursuit of safety and freedom.
After settling in America, Karel completed his high school education and pursued higher studies, earning an MBA from Columbia University. His sharp, analytical mind — honed through rigorous academic training — would later prove instrumental in his evolution as a martial arts educator. Before discovering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Karel trained in taekwondo, building a foundation in striking that would eventually give way to a lifelong commitment to grappling.
