Henry Akins

Henry Akins was born and raised in Oklahoma, United States, where his first exposure to martial arts came through Tae Kwon Do. Training in that discipline, Akins observed a pattern that would fundamentally reshape his outlook on self-defense: his high school friends who wrestled consistently dominated larger opponents in real street altercations. That revelation led him to a clear conclusion — grappling-based martial arts offered a far more reliable foundation for genuine self-defense than striking-focused disciplines.

In the early 1990s, a VHS tape featuring Rickson Gracie competing in vale-tudo brought Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into sharp focus for Akins. Learning that the Gracie family had established a base in California, he made the decisive choice to leave Oklahoma and relocate to the west coast in pursuit of serious grappling training.

Akins arrived in California in 1995 with a singular objective: to train under Rickson Gracie, whom he had identified as the finest practitioner in the Gracie family. His first point of contact was the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Torrance — the only Gracie school he could locate at the time. The inquiry hit an immediate wall rooted in a well-known family rift. The academy, run by Rorion Gracie, denied any knowledge of Rickson, a reflection of the significant falling out between the two brothers.

Undeterred, Akins found another path through a personal connection: his aunt's personal trainer happened to train at Rickson's academy and was able to provide a contact number. Akins recalled the experience in a 2010 interview with On The Mat:

"Actually I called the Gracie Torrance Academy first as it was the only one listed, but at the time there was big rivalry between Rickson and Rorion Gracie, they had a big falling out at the time and when I asked if Rickson trained there they said 'Rickson, we don't know anyone named Rickson,' and they wouldn't give us any information. So what happened was that my aunt had a personal trainer that trained at Rickson's so we were able to get the number. It was kind of hard to track down, but I knew I wanted to train with Rickson because I heard he was the best of all of the Gracies so I figured if you're going to go train you might as well train with the best."

With the number secured, Akins made his way to Rickson Gracie's academy on Pico Blvd in West Los Angeles, where his BJJ journey began in earnest.

Upon arriving at the Pico Blvd academy, Akins quickly formed a close friendship with Luis Herédia, who served as assistant coach under Rickson Gracie. Committed to immersing himself as fully as possible in the academy's environment, Akins joined the gym's staff as secretary — dedicating up to 70 hours per week to the academy. That level of commitment reflected both his passion for jiu-jitsu and his determination to absorb everything the environment had to offer.

In 1997, Akins took on the role of assistant instructor at Luis Herédia's gym in Pacific Palisades, while continuing his training at Rickson's main academy. His responsibilities expanded further in 2000, when he was appointed as an instructor at the Rickson Gracie academy on Wilshire Blvd.

In 2004, following a training session at Rickson Gracie's personal residence, Rickson awarded Akins his black belt — making him Rickson's third American black belt. The promotion marked the culmination of nearly a decade of intensive dedication to the art and to the Rickson Gracie academy.

Following Luis Herédia's return to Rio de Janeiro, Henry Akins was appointed head instructor at the Rickson Gracie academy — stepping into a role that placed him at the center of one of BJJ's most respected training environments. He held the position until 2008, when a reported severe injury necessitated his departure.

Akins later re-emerged in the grappling community as head coach of Dynamix Martial Arts, a prominent MMA academy based in Los Angeles, California. The position provided a platform to continue sharing his approach to jiu-jitsu with a new generation of practitioners within a high-level competitive environment.

Henry Akins stands as one of the most respected black belts produced by Rickson Gracie, and his reputation rests as much on his articulated philosophy as on his technical ability. A staunch advocate for jiu-jitsu's foundational fundamentals, Akins prioritizes efficiency, core principles, and real-world applicability over sport-specific adaptations.

A Critical View of Modern Sport Jiu-Jitsu

Akins draws a direct parallel between modern sport jiu-jitsu and Tae Kwon Do — arguing that both represent diluted sporting formats that have drifted from their martial art's self-defense origins. This perspective is deeply rooted in his lineage under Rickson Gracie, widely regarded as the most traditionally-minded practitioner within the Gracie family, and in Akins' own formative realization — shaped during his high school years in Oklahoma — that grappling's true value lies in its real-world effectiveness.

Teaching the "Why" Behind the Technique

Akins' coaching style centers on understanding the reasoning behind each technique rather than drilling sport-oriented sequences in isolation. That emphasis on the "why" has distinguished his approach from much of the broader competitive landscape and cemented his reputation as a thoughtful, principled voice within Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — one whose influence continues to resonate across the grappling community.
