Flávio Junqueira

Flávio Junqueira was born in 1990 in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, with much of his formative years unfolding in the Brazilian countryside — far from the jiu-jitsu mats where he would later make his name. From age five, Junqueira immersed himself in rodeo culture, developing a particular proficiency in Team Roping, competing in both the heading and heeling roles. His dedication carried him to the national level, a defining achievement that anchored his early athletic identity until his 17th birthday.

At age 14, while still actively competing in Team Roping, Junqueira began training jiu-jitsu under professor Alessandro Bandeira in Piracicaba. For several years, both disciplines coexisted in his life. Over time, however, grappling took hold as his central passion. The technical demands, discipline, and competitive structure of BJJ resonated deeply with the young athlete, and the sport gradually became the primary focus of his sporting life as he stepped away from the rodeo arena.

Blue Belt Breakthrough

Flávio Junqueira's colored belt career established him as one of Brazil's most promising grappling prospects, with his most explosive performances arriving at the blue belt level. In 2010, Junqueira claimed gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals NoGi and earned a bronze medal at the 2010 IBJJF World Championship, along with an additional bronze in the absolute — results that signaled his potential on the international stage.

Alliance Matriz and the Competitive Resurgence

As his competitive momentum built, coaching responsibilities began competing for his attention around age 21, temporarily slowing his trajectory as an athlete. Recognizing the need for a higher level of training to reach his full potential, Junqueira made a decisive move at age 23 — relocating to São Paulo to join Alliance's headquarters, Alliance Matriz, under the direct instruction of Fábio Gurgel, one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of the sport.

The move proved transformative. Training at Alliance Matriz reignited his competitive form, and his purple and brown belt years delivered a string of significant international results. In 2014, he earned silver at the IBJJF World Championship NoGi at purple belt. By 2016, competing as a brown belt, he had claimed gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals, the IBJJF São Paulo Open, and back-to-back UAEJJF World Pro Trials victories in both Gramado and Brasília. This sustained high-level performance across multiple prestigious competitions made a compelling case for promotion.

In December 2017, Fábio Gurgel promoted Junqueira to the black belt rank — a milestone made additionally significant by the fact that Junqueira became Gurgel's 101st black belt promotion, a distinction that reflects both the depth of Alliance's lineage and Junqueira's place within it.

Immediate Impact at the Highest Level

Following his black belt promotion in December 2017, Flávio Junqueira wasted little time demonstrating that his competitive edge had carried forward into the sport's highest rank. In 2018, he captured gold at the CBJJE World Championship and added the IBJJF Floripa Open NoGi title, establishing an immediate presence in the black belt division. The following year brought further success, with Junqueira winning the IBJJF Curitiba Summer Open in the gi and claiming absolute gold at the IBJJF Curitiba Summer Open NoGi in 2019.

Masters Division Performance

Junqueira competes in the Meio Pesado division, corresponding to the 88.30 kg (195.0 lbs) weight class. His competitive range extended into the Masters divisions as well, where he produced some of his most notable results. At the 2020 IBJJF European Open, Junqueira claimed gold in his weight category and earned silver in the absolute, affirming his continued relevance as a black belt competitor across multiple competitive formats.

The Foundation of a Coaching Identity

Flávio Junqueira's path as a coach began well before his black belt promotion, with his first experiences on the instructional side of the sport dating back to around age 21. That early exposure to coaching informed his understanding of BJJ pedagogy, even as he later prioritized his own competitive development at Alliance Matriz. In 2018, after years of refining his craft at Alliance's headquarters, Junqueira returned to his hometown of Piracicaba, São Paulo, to open his own Alliance affiliate gym.

Producing Champions

The results of his coaching work materialized with striking speed. In 2019 — just one year after the gym's founding — athlete Roberta Medeiros claimed a world championship title, becoming the academy's first world champion under Junqueira's guidance. The achievement served as early validation of his ability to develop competitors at the highest level, reflecting the broader Alliance philosophy of cultivating technically sound, competition-ready practitioners.
