His first exposure to the art came as a child under Bernardo, a student of Grand Master Helio Gracie, though those early sessions produced no lasting commitment. It was not until after his 15th birthday that Santos truly embraced the discipline, when he began training at the academy of Rolls Gracie — a celebrated venue shared with Rolls's brother Carlson Gracie.

He settled first in New York City, working as a personal trainer, but the city's relentless pace proved difficult to adapt to. Santos soon relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, seeking a different rhythm.

Building Connections Across the Country

In Utah, Santos maintained his competitive edge by training with local judokas and wrestlers, preserving the physical sharpness that years of competition had built. He also discovered that Pedro Sauer was based in Utah at the time and trained with him regularly, keeping his connection to BJJ alive far from its Brazilian roots. The next chapter opened through a magazine article revealing that Rorion Gracie and Royce Gracie had settled in California. Santos contacted them immediately and traveled west — setting in motion the events that would define his legacy in American BJJ.

At the Epicenter of a Historic Moment

When Santos arrived in California, Royce Gracie was in the final stages of preparation for the first Ultimate Fighting Championship — a tournament that would introduce Brazilian jiu-jitsu to a global audience unlike anything before it. The Gracie camp needed someone to fill a vacant coaching position while Royce devoted his complete focus to fight preparation. Santos stepped in without hesitation, placing himself behind Royce Gracie at the epicenter of one of the most consequential events in combat sports history, even as his role remained largely behind the scenes.

Establishing Roots in San Diego

Following the UFC, Santos settled in San Diego, California, where he established a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu affiliate around 1994. After approximately two years within the Gracie franchise structure, he chose to launch his own independent brand — a decision that proved transformative. The Fabio Santos Academy grew steadily into one of the oldest and most respected Brazilian jiu-jitsu institutions in the San Diego area, drawing students from across the region and producing competitors and instructors who would carry his teachings forward.

Fabio Santos never stepped away from competition when his teaching career took hold.
