That promotion placed him among an exceptionally rare group: the BJJ Dirty Dozen, the first twelve non-Brazilian natives to achieve black belt rank in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In 1998, he earned a bronze medal at the black belt level, becoming the first American to medal at the IBJJF Worlds. His titles span Pan Championships, no-gi World Championships, American Nationals, and numerous open tournaments. At the 2004 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship and again in 2011, he claimed gold, while his no-gi World Championship victories stretch from 2009 through 2019 across multiple age divisions. David Meyer's commitment to plant-based living predates the mainstream conversation about vegan performance in combat sports by decades. He became vegetarian in 1985 and transitioned to a fully vegan lifestyle by 1993, making him one of the earliest and most consistent advocates for plant-based nutrition within martial arts communities.

To formalize that advocacy, Meyer launched the Smarter Diet platform and the Fuel For The Fighter project, both aimed at demonstrating the performance benefits of plant-based diets for athletes. The Fuel For The Fighter initiative drew support from prominent combat sports figures including Jake Shields, Gil Melendez, James Wilks, Nick Diaz, and Nate Diaz — fighters who lent their backing to the project's mission. The Diaz brothers, who trained under Cesar Gracie at Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu since their teenage years, brought additional visibility to the initiative as advocates for its goals.

Meyer has extended his exploration of martial arts philosophy into the podcast format through The Ageless Warrior Lab, a program examining how the principles underlying martial arts practice intersect with leadership, health, relationships, and intentional living — themes that connect his competitive career, his advocacy work, and his broader view of what martial arts training offers across a lifetime.

Parallel to his life in jiu-jitsu, David Meyer has built a career in animal welfare and food systems advocacy of comparable depth and impact. He co-founded Adopt-a-Pet.com, which grew into the world's largest nonprofit pet adoption platform, connecting millions of animals with prospective owners across North America. Meyer served as CEO of Adopt-a-Pet.com for 22 years, stewarding its growth before the platform was acquired by Mars Inc.

Following that chapter, Meyer continued his animal welfare work through leadership roles at Humane America Animal Foundation and Food System Innovations, both of which he serves as President and Co-Founder. These organizations focus on animal welfare, food systems, and public health — areas where Meyer has worked to influence policy at the federal level, advising U.S. policymakers on issues at the intersection of animal agriculture and public welfare. Across his philanthropic work, he has helped secure and distribute more than $160 million in funding to animal welfare and food system causes.
