Born on June 28, 1972, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Daniel Simões entered a world where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was not simply a sport but a family inheritance. His close ties to cousins Renzo Gracie, Ralph Gracie, and Ryan Gracie ensured the art remained a constant presence throughout his childhood — woven into the fabric of daily life rather than something discovered from the outside. By 1982, around the age of ten, Daniel had committed fully to his training, a dedication that would define the decades ahead.

That deep immersion in Gracie culture earned him a nickname he would carry throughout his competitive career: "Gracie" — a designation that spoke to both his bloodline and his profound identification with the family's martial legacy.

Daniel refined his game under Carlos Gracie Junior and Jean Jacques Machado at Gracie Barra, a foundation that forged him into a technically precise and relentlessly competitive grappler. The Gracie Barra system provided both the structure and the standard that drove his development, and by the mid-1990s his performance had clearly outpaced his belt rank.

The defining moment arrived at the 1996 IBJJF World Championship, where Daniel entered the absolute division as a brown belt and won — an extraordinary result that signaled his readiness for the sport's highest competitive tier before his formal promotion. That victory served as the direct catalyst for his black belt promotion in 1996, a prestigious path reflecting the traditional Gracie principle of earning rank through proven performance rather than time served.

Daniel validated the promotion without delay. That same year, he entered the Brasileiro — the Brazilian National Championship — in the Super Heavyweight division and claimed gold, announcing himself immediately as a legitimate force at the black belt level.

Domestic Dominance

What followed was one of the most sustained runs of elite-level competition in Brazilian heavyweight grappling during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Daniel captured the Brazilian Nationals title in the Super Heavyweight division in 1996, 1997, and again in 1999, establishing himself as one of Brazil's premier competitors in that weight class across an extended stretch — a mark of consistency that separated him from single-season standouts.

World Championship Presence

His quality extended well beyond the domestic stage. At the IBJJF World Championship, Daniel reached the final in four separate years — 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2001 — earning silver medals on each occasion. Transition to Mixed Martial Arts
