Daniel Azevedo

Daniel Azevedo was born in Brasília, the capital of Brazil, and entered the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through one of the sport's most culturally significant moments. His brother, captivated by the first UFC event on November 12, 1993, spent years urging Daniel to step onto the mats — persistence that finally paid off in 2000, when Daniel began training and discovered a passion that would come to define his life.

His foundational instructor was Carlos Vieira, widely respected in the BJJ community as "Portugues" — a distinguished coach who guided Daniel through every rank from white belt to black belt. That journey reached its apex in 2007, when Daniel claimed victory at the Pan American Championship in the brown belt division, a performance that earned him his black belt promotion. The achievement marked both a technical milestone and a pivotal transition: around the same time, Carlos Vieira departed Brasília to pursue a teaching career abroad, moving first to Finland, then Spain, before eventually settling in Australia. With his foundational coach gone, Daniel faced the challenge of charting a new course on his own terms.

Following Carlos Vieira's departure, Daniel Azevedo relocated to São Paulo, where his academic background in Computer Science opened doors to a corporate career. He found his way to the headquarters of Cia Paulista and began training under Max Trombini, re-immersing himself in a structured competitive environment.

By mid-2009, however, Daniel reached a defining crossroads. Recognising that corporate life offered little fulfilment, he walked away from his 9-to-5 position entirely — a decision that came with a 75% reduction in income — and committed himself fully to BJJ as both a teacher and a competitor at the Cia Paulista academy. The rewards of that sacrifice became clear on the competitive circuit in 2010, when Daniel captured gold at the SP Cup and followed it with a title at the World Jiu-Jitsu Cup, organised by the CBJJE. His performances formed part of a broader resurgence for Cia Paulista, a team rebuilding its competitive identity through athletes like Daniel and his teammate Eduardo Santoro after several years away from the podium spotlight.

Daniel Azevedo eventually relocated to the United States, joining Fight Sports — the team founded by Roberto Abreu — and establishing himself as one of the most prominent figures in the Miami grappling scene. The move placed him within one of North America's most competitive BJJ environments and represented a natural evolution in his career trajectory.

The 2013 Miami Open: A Statement Performance

At the 2013 Miami Open, competing under the Cia Paulista banner, Daniel delivered one of his most complete performances to date. He swept the Super Pesado division (-100kg/221lbs) at black belt level, advancing through the bracket without conceding the weight category title. Riding that momentum, he pushed deeper into the absolute division, reaching the final where he faced Ricardo Rezende of Fight Sports. Rezende edged the contest to claim open weight gold, denying Daniel a historic double title on the day.

Despite narrowly missing the absolute, the Super Pesado victory and his run to the absolute final affirmed Daniel's standing among the elite in his division. The Miami Open performance cemented his reputation on the international stage — a testament to years of sacrifice, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the sport.
