John Lewis began his martial arts journey at age 13 through Sho Kon Do, a discipline that grounded him in the core principles of striking and self-defense. His early dedication produced black belts in both Sho Kon Do and Japanese Ju-Jutsu — a technical foundation that few American fighters of his generation could match.

A defining chapter in Lewis's development came through his study of judo under Gene LeBell, one of the most respected and legendary figures in American martial arts history. Training from white belt all the way to black belt under LeBell, Lewis absorbed not only judo's throwing and grappling principles but also the broader philosophy of multi-disciplinary combat that LeBell embodied. The black belt awarded by LeBell represented both a technical milestone and a personal endorsement from one of the sport's most authoritative voices.

John Lewis entered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under one of the art's most celebrated practitioners, Rickson Gracie, earning his blue belt under his guidance. Following his time with Rickson, Lewis trained briefly at Machado Jiu-Jitsu, deepening his exposure to the Gracie family's approach to ground fighting. John Lewis played a foundational role in establishing Nova União's presence on American soil, becoming the team's first representative in the United States. His most significant institutional contribution was founding J-Sect Jiu-Jitsu in Las Vegas, Nevada — the first Nova União affiliate gym to open in the country. The Las Vegas academy served as a beachhead for the team's training methodology and competitive culture at a time when Brazilian BJJ academies were only beginning to take root in North America.

Lewis extended Nova União's American footprint further by opening an additional academy in Honolulu, Hawaii, though that location later closed. Together, these efforts represented a deliberate and pioneering push to connect American practitioners with the elite infrastructure and coaching philosophy of one of Brazil's most accomplished BJJ organizations. His work as Nova União's first American representative helped introduce the team's competitive standards and technical identity to a generation of US-based fighters and coaches.
