Bruno Ferreira

Bruno Ferreira was born on October 23, 1975, in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil. During his formative years, his family relocated to Leblon, a Rio de Janeiro neighborhood with a deeply embedded martial arts culture and a long history of producing BJJ talent — an environment that proved formative in shaping Bruno's relationship with combat sports.

At age 11, Bruno began his martial arts journey through Karate and Tae Kwon Do, disciplines that instilled the fundamentals of striking, coordination, and mental discipline. By 16, he had discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the grappling art that would come to define the trajectory of his life and career.

Bruno's development as a BJJ practitioner took shape under two respected figures within the Nova Geração system. His primary instructor was Francisco Albuquerque, known as 'Toco' — a black belt under Carlson Gracie Sr. and co-founder of Nova Geração. Bruno also trained alongside Rodrigo Medeiros, another well-regarded figure within the Nova Geração lineage, whose technical influence further sharpened Bruno's game.

2005 marked a defining milestone in Bruno's journey. He captured the CBJJ Brazilian National title and the IBJJF International Masters & Seniors title — both at brown belt in the Master division — before earning his black belt promotion that same year. The back-to-back titles paired with his promotion served as a powerful affirmation of his readiness for the sport's highest level. Known by the nickname 'Brunão' — Portuguese for 'big Bruno' — he brought a commanding physical presence to the mat that complemented his technical mastery.

Bruno Ferreira built his competitive record primarily in the Meio Pesado division (88kg/194lbs), earning podium finishes across Brazil's most prestigious tournaments. His brown belt campaign in 2005 stood out immediately: consecutive titles at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals and the IBJJF International Masters & Seniors Championship signaled that he was prepared to compete at the black belt level the moment he was promoted.

His transition to black belt competition delivered further results. In 2006, Bruno claimed silver at the IBJJF South American Championship, competing in both the weight and absolute divisions — a testament to his conditioning and versatility. That same year, he added bronze at the CBJJ Brazilian National Teams, again performing across both weight and absolute brackets, reinforcing his reputation as a well-rounded competitor.

Bruno's longevity on the competition circuit is perhaps best illustrated by his return to the podium at the IBJJF London Winter International Open in 2016, where he earned silver in the black belt Master division — more than a decade after his initial promotion and while simultaneously building his coaching career in England.

Following his competitive years in Brazil, Bruno channeled his expertise into coaching at an international level. He relocated to the United Arab Emirates, where he spent two years teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense to members of the UAE Armed Forces — a role that placed him at the forefront of the sport's early development in the region.

In 2014, Bruno moved to England and joined Checkmat – Fight Zone London as head coach, a position he held through 2018. Fight Zone London ranks among the most prominent BJJ academies in the United Kingdom, and Bruno's tenure there helped establish his standing as a skilled and knowledgeable coach within the European BJJ community. His 2016 competition medal during this period demonstrated that his technical sharpness remained intact alongside his coaching responsibilities.

Following his time in London, Bruno transitioned to Portugal, where he founded his own academy — Bruno Ferreira BJJ — in Gaia. The move represented the natural evolution of his career: from competitor to international ambassador of the sport, and ultimately to academy owner and head instructor. Competing under the Portuguese flag, Bruno contributes to the growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Europe through his work both on and off the mat.
