Arthur Detanico

Arthur Detânico was born on March 2, 1994, in the Gaucho region of southern Brazil — a setting that proved formative in shaping his path toward becoming one of its most recognized jiu-jitsu competitors. His introduction to the sport came through a cousin who trained BJJ, sparking a curiosity that would evolve into a lifelong pursuit. At 13, Detânico walked through the doors of Academia JA, placing himself under the guidance of Mateus Bernardi — known as 'Alemão' — and Antônio Moro, widely known as 'Jamanta.'

From the outset, Arthur was drawn not only to the technical demands of jiu-jitsu but also to its competitive culture. He immersed himself fully in the sport's lifestyle, laying a foundation that would carry him through every stage of his development on the mats.

Arthur Detânico's progression through the belt ranks reflected his unwavering commitment to JABJJ and the quality of instruction he received from Mateus Bernardi. Throughout his colored belt years, Detânico consistently tested himself beyond his weight class, entering open weight divisions to measure his development against larger, more varied competition — a habit that sharpened both his game and his competitive mentality.

Purple and Brown Belt: Building a Competitive Identity

It was during his purple belt years that Arthur began seriously considering a professional life built around grappling, a shift in perspective catalyzed by an offer to take on a coaching role at the academy. That same period brought meaningful competitive validation: in 2015, he claimed gold at the IBJJF South American Championship as a purple belt, then returned the following year to earn a third-place finish at the same event. Advancing to brown belt, Detânico raised his national profile by winning the CBLP Brazilian Nationals in 2017 — a result that signaled his readiness for the sport's highest competitive tier.

The Black Belt Promotion

By the end of 2018, after years of steady progression within the same academy, Mateus Bernardi awarded Arthur Detânico his black belt — the culmination of a decade and a half of dedicated training that never strayed far from its roots.

Arthur Detânico's transition to the black belt division announced itself with force. In 2019, his first full year competing at the black belt level, he claimed gold at the 2019 IBJJF South Brazilian Championship and followed with a first-place finish at the 2019 IBJJF Floripa Fall International Open — performances that established him as a legitimate presence on both the national and international circuit.

Sustained Excellence and the Mental Game

Those early results proved to be more than a debut surge. Detânico continued to produce high-level performances in the years that followed, building steadily on the momentum of his debut season. A significant factor behind his competitive consistency has been his work with mental coach Leonardo Chebar, whose contributions Arthur credits as instrumental in sustaining his focus, resilience, and composure under pressure throughout his black belt career.
