Alex Nguyen

Alex Nguyen was born on January 17, 2000, in Vietnam, and relocated to the United States with her family in 2002, settling in Maryland where she spent her formative years. Encouraged by her parents to explore a range of extracurricular activities, Alex cycled through arts, soccer, and judo before discovering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She began training in 2009 at age nine — around the same time she joined her school's wrestling team — a combination that laid the foundation for an exceptionally well-rounded grappling game.

From the outset, her father took a deeply involved role in shaping her athletic development. In a November 2022 interview with BJJ Heroes, Nguyen recalled that her father posed a striking question when she was just nine years old: whether she wanted to train recreationally or pursue elite competition. Wanting to make him proud, Alex chose the elite path. That decision translated into a demanding weekly schedule of approximately 32 hours, combining weightlifting, scholastic wrestling, and jiu-jitsu — all balanced alongside her academic responsibilities. It was a workload that would have tested any adult athlete, let alone a child still in primary school.

The relentless intensity of her father's program gradually eroded Alex's passion for the sport and placed significant strain on their relationship. In 2018, after years of training under those conditions, she made a deliberate choice to step away from the competitive grind and return to jiu-jitsu on her own terms — training as a hobbyist, free from the weight of external expectation.

Throughout her entire journey, Greg Souders of Standard Jiu-Jitsu remained a constant and guiding presence. Souders coached Alex from her very first belt through every stage of her development, and in December 2020 he presided over her black belt promotion — a milestone that marked both athletic achievement and a profound personal turning point. Earning her black belt reignited something in Nguyen. With a healthier, self-determined relationship to the sport, she chose to give competitive jiu-jitsu a second chance.

In her November 2022 BJJ Heroes interview, Nguyen spoke candidly about the psychological toll that elite youth training can exact, offering a rare and honest account of how early burnout ultimately redirected her path in the sport.

Youth and Juvenile Success

Even amid the pressures of her early training environment, Nguyen's talent on the mats was impossible to overlook. She announced herself as an exceptional prospect by winning the IBJJF Pan Kids Championship in 2013, then delivered one of the most dominant juvenile seasons in recent memory in 2016. That year, she captured IBJJF World Championship gold in both the weight and absolute divisions, claimed the IBJJF Pan Championship title, and swept the IBJJF American Nationals in both gi and no-gi formats — a clean sweep that signaled she was among the most gifted young competitors in the sport.

Colored Belt Ascent

Her progression through the colored belt ranks was equally impressive. At purple belt, she claimed IBJJF World Championship gold in 2018 and followed it with IBJJF Pan Championship gold in 2019, demonstrating consistency across gi and no-gi formats and multiple weight categories. At brown belt in 2020, she added the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi title to her résumé — capping a colored belt career that established her as one of the most decorated competitors of her generation to enter the black belt ranks.

Transition to the Elite Level

Following her December 2020 black belt promotion, Nguyen re-engaged with competition carrying renewed, self-directed motivation. Her debut season on the international black belt stage produced a podium finish at the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi in 2021, where she placed third — a strong opening statement that confirmed her readiness at the elite level. She further demonstrated her competitive versatility at the 2022 Midwest Finishers, capturing gold in both the 115 lbs and 125 lbs divisions, showcasing a willingness and ability to compete across weight categories.

World No-Gi Champion

The defining result of her early black belt career arrived later in 2022, when Nguyen was crowned IBJJF World No-Gi Champion — the most prestigious title of her black belt career. In the final, she defeated Jessica Crane to claim the gold medal, a victory that announced her as a genuine force at the highest levels of women's no-gi competition. Competing in the Peso Pluma division at 53.5 kg / 118 lbs, Nguyen has built a black belt record that reflects both the extraordinary foundation laid during her youth career and the renewed sense of purpose she found after stepping away from the sport and returning on her own terms.
