About this video
Breaking an opponent's defensive grips during an armlock involves a series of strategic movements to prevent the opponent from hiding their hand and maintaining their grip. The following steps outline the process:
- Slide your knee up until your foot finds the opponent's hip line, then open your knee out and shift your weight away, creating a pinch on their hip.
- Use this position to potentially access the opponent's elbow, keeping them from using their frame effectively.
- Perform a palm strike to the opponent's hand to lift it, then drop your chest over it or slide up in one move, adjusting to an S-mount position.
- Bring the opponent's hand to your body, maintaining distance between their hand and head, and swing your leg over their head to secure the armlock position.
- If the opponent connects their hands, maintain tension on the arm to prevent them from moving it away.
- Use one hand to keep tension and the other to drag the opponent's framing arm offline, allowing you to reach for the grip.
- Apply a rear naked choke grip on the opponent's hand, connecting it to your body and ensuring the 'V' shape of your arm is along the centerline of your body for maximum strength.
- Use your other hand to strip the opponent's grip if necessary, but you should be strong enough to break through most grips.
- A helpful tip is to give the opponent's arm a little shake as you apply pressure to break the grip.
- If the opponent manages to hide their hand, use your hip to re-expose it and continue to keep the arm with you, preventing escape.
- Drag the opponent's elbow offline to remove the frame, then secure the rear naked choke grip on the desired arm.
- Switch arms if necessary to maintain the 'V' lock on the opponent's hand and keep it along your centerline.
This technique is versatile and can be adapted to use your preferred arm for the choke grip, regardless of the side you're attacking from.
