Tex Johnson

Aaron Michael Johnson was born on April 1, 1986, in Bedford, Ohio, into a military family whose frequent relocations took him across the United States during his formative years. That transient upbringing exposed him to a diverse range of influences, and martial arts emerged as a constant thread through his development. As a child, Johnson was introduced to tae kwon do through his family — an early spark that planted the seeds of a competitive mindset defining his entire athletic identity.

His high school years in Douglasville, Georgia, brought him into two disciplines that would anchor his grappling foundation: football and wrestling. Competing for Douglasville High School, Johnson forged the physical durability and positional instincts that wrestlers carry throughout their careers. By age 21, he had shifted his focus to striking arts, pursuing kickboxing and Muay Thai and building a streak of TKO and KO victories in amateur competition. Those years of striking experience cultivated a comfort with physical confrontation and an offensive mindset that would later translate directly onto the mats.

Johnson's formal introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came in 2008, when he began training in mixed martial arts at Knuckleup Fitness under coach Steve Headden. Jiu-jitsu quickly became a central focus, and he sought out higher levels of instruction, training under Rigan Machado and Jimmy Long before finding his way to Alliance Jiu-Jitsu in Atlanta.

At Alliance, Johnson trained under some of the most respected names in the sport: Romero Cavalcanti, Leo Nogueira, and Lucas Lepri. The Alliance environment sharpened his technical development and competitive ambitions considerably. Following a fallout with Lepri, however, his path to the black belt took a different direction. In 2015, Phil Smith promoted him to black belt — a milestone that marked formal recognition of years of dedicated training and hard-earned competition experience.

Seeking continued growth, Johnson relocated to New York City to train under Murilo Santana at Unity Jiu-Jitsu. That move proved pivotal, coinciding with the most prolific stretch of his competitive career. He subsequently joined Fight Sports in Miami, which became his long-term training home.

Sustained Championship Excellence

Throughout the late 2010s, Johnson established himself as one of the most dangerous no-gi competitors in the super-heavyweight division. The clearest measure of that dominance was his three consecutive IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship titles in 2016, 2017, and 2018 — a run of sustained excellence at one of the most competitive annual IBJJF events on the calendar. Winning the same major title three times in succession is a mark of consistency that few grapplers achieve, and Johnson did it at a weight class where the margins are unforgiving.

He supplemented those Pan titles with multiple IBJJF regional open victories, claiming gold at the IBJJF New York Spring Open in 2017 and 2018, the IBJJF New York Spring No-Gi Open in 2017, and the IBJJF Atlanta Winter Open in both 2017 and 2018.

ADCC Trials and Grand Prix Finals

In 2018, Johnson claimed gold at the ADCC East Coast US Trials, earning a hard-fought spot to compete against the world's elite grapplers at the ADCC World Championships — one of the most coveted outcomes in competitive grappling. His 2019 campaign brought a runner-up finish at the Kasai Pro 5 Heavyweight Grand Prix, where he advanced to the final before falling to Kaynan Duarte. Reaching the final of a loaded heavyweight grand prix against an opponent of Duarte's caliber underscored Johnson's standing among the best no-gi heavyweights in the world. He continued competing at the IBJJF level into the 2020s, adding the IBJJF Dallas Open No-Gi title in 2021 to his record.

Submission-First Philosophy

Johnson's reputation in the grappling community is built on a relentless, submission-first approach that consistently prioritizes finishing opponents over accumulating points. His wrestling base and years of striking training inform a pressure-heavy game that generates submission opportunities from dominant positions, making him a threat from the moment a match begins. Where many grapplers settle for positional control, Johnson hunts for the finish.

The 15-Second Armbar

That finishing instinct translated directly into mixed martial arts, where Johnson delivered one of the most memorable performances in Bellator MMA history. His armbar finish of Brennan Ward in just 15 seconds stands as the second-fastest submission in Bellator MMA history — a performance that brought mainstream attention to his grappling capabilities and demonstrated how fluidly his submission hunting transfers under MMA rules. The all-time Bellator record belongs to Aviv Gozali, whose 11-second heel hook edges Johnson's mark, but a 15-second armbar finish in a professional MMA bout remains an extraordinary display of submission precision.
