Stephen Roberto

Born on July 4, 1974, in Long Beach, California, Stephen Roberto has called Guam home since 1977, when his family relocated to the island territory in Micronesia. Growing up in Guam shaped Roberto's identity in profound ways, ultimately placing him at the center of one of the Pacific region's most significant BJJ development stories.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu arrived on the island during the mid-1990s through Joey Calvo and Dan O'Connor, two practitioners who had trained at Ralph Gracie's gym in Mountain View, California. Returning to Guam, the pair established a grappling workgroup that laid the foundation for BJJ on the island. Roberto joined shortly after it formed, drawn by the martial art's practical applications and its natural fit within Guam's no-holds-barred combat sports culture. That environment — where jiu-jitsu functioned as a fighting tool rather than a sport — left a lasting imprint on how Roberto approached both his own training and, later, his coaching philosophy.

As Roberto's passion for jiu-jitsu deepened, the limitations of training exclusively on a remote Pacific island became clear. He began making regular trips to the US mainland and Japan, seeking instruction from leading coaches of the era — including practitioners associated with Ralph Gracie's gym in California and Tetsuji Kato in Japan. These journeys reflected a serious commitment to technical growth at a time when accessing high-level BJJ required considerable effort and sacrifice.

The most consequential of these connections came in 1998, when Roberto met Enson Inoue in Japan. The founder of Purebred and a towering figure in Japanese MMA during the Pride FC era, Inoue quickly became Roberto's primary mentor and the central reference point for his jiu-jitsu development. Under Inoue's guidance — and within the high-intensity training environment of Purebred's Ōmiya headquarters — Roberto progressed through every belt level from blue to black, building a game shaped by Inoue's philosophy of combat-tested grappling.

Through his relationship with Inoue, Roberto also forged a close bond with Mike Fowler, who became a significant technical influence on his jiu-jitsu. On January 25, 2008, both Enson Inoue and Mike Fowler promoted Roberto to black belt in a dual ceremony — a recognition from both mentors of the depth and quality of his development. The promotion marked a pivotal moment, coinciding with Roberto's broader transition from competitor to academy builder and cementing his standing within the Purebred lineage.

Guam's early BJJ scene was inseparable from no-holds-barred competition, and Roberto embraced that environment fully. He competed in mixed martial arts on five occasions, compiling a professional record of 4-1-0 that reflected his effectiveness as a fighter and the practicality of his grappling foundation.

In 2006, following a period of significant personal reflection, Roberto chose to retire from cage fighting. The decision was deliberate and forward-looking: rather than continuing as a competitor, he committed his energy entirely to building a sport-oriented jiu-jitsu academy on Guam. The MMA experience, however, was never left behind. The combat-tested mindset and practical approach to grappling that Roberto developed during his fighting years became defining pillars of Purebred Guam's culture — an academy where technical rigor and competitive seriousness were foundational values from the outset.

In September 2006, Roberto opened the first Purebred affiliate gym in Guam, establishing what would become one of the most prominent jiu-jitsu academies in the Pacific. Purebred, originally founded by Enson Inoue in Japan, had built its reputation during the golden era of Japanese MMA, with its Ōmiya headquarters serving as a proving ground for elite competitors during the Pride FC years. As Japanese MMA declined following Pride's closure, the headquarters' prominence faded alongside it.

The contrast with Purebred Guam's trajectory could not have been sharper. Under Roberto's leadership, the Guam academy grew steadily in size and competitive output, producing results that extended well beyond what Guam's geography might suggest. In 2008, Enson Inoue nominated Purebred Guam as the main representative of the Purebred grappling affiliation — a formal recognition of the academy's sustained success and Roberto's leadership. That same year, the team earned two podium finishes at the Asian Open Championship, reportedly becoming the first American team to achieve that milestone at the event. The accomplishment underscored Roberto's ability to build a genuinely competitive program far from the traditional centers of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Roberto's competition record at the IBJJF Asian Open Championship stands as one of the more remarkable in Masters-division jiu-jitsu — particularly given that he built and ran a full-time academy throughout much of his competitive career. Competing in the Super Pesado division at 100kg / 221lbs, Roberto demonstrated the kind of longevity that reflects both physical durability and continuous technical refinement.

His Asian Open results span multiple divisions and age brackets: gold in 2010 in the Master absolute division, gold again in 2013 in the Senior 1 division, and a third gold in 2015 in the Master 3 division. He also earned silver medals at the same event in 2008 (Master absolute), 2012 (Master), and 2015 (Master 3 absolute), along with a bronze in the 2012 Master absolute division. Earlier in his career, Roberto posted back-to-back runner-up finishes at the All Japan Championship — taking silver in both the weight and absolute divisions in 2006 and repeating the feat in 2007. Taken together, this body of work illustrates a career of consistent results across more than a decade of high-level tournament competition, with Roberto's sharpest performances often coming in the Masters and Senior divisions, where experience and technical precision tend to outweigh raw athleticism.

One of the defining characteristics of Purebred Guam under Roberto's leadership is its capacity to cultivate meaningful international relationships despite geographic isolation. The academy developed strong ties with BJJ United (also known as Tac Team), led by Jared Weiner, as well as with Atos Jiu-Jitsu, one of the premier competitive teams in the world.

The connection to Atos was forged through two of Roberto's close friends: Ralph Go and Carlo Pena of JiuJitsu Manila in the Philippines. Go and Pena trained extensively with Atos founder Ramon Lemos in Rio Claro, São Paulo, Brazil, establishing a direct relationship between the Filipino academy and one of Brazil's most successful competition programs. That relationship created a bridge to Purebred Guam, prompting Roberto to invite several of Atos' top competitors to the island as instructors and training partners.

The Atos athletes who have trained at Purebred Guam include Rafael Mendes, Guilherme Mendes, Bruno Frazatto, Claudio Calasans, JT Torres, and Keenan Cornelius — a roster that speaks to the depth and credibility of the relationship Roberto built across the Pacific. These visits elevated the competitive standard at Purebred Guam and reinforced the academy's standing within the global BJJ community. Roberto's ability to forge and sustain connections across the United States, Japan, the Philippines, and Brazil has established him not only as a coach and competitor, but as one of the sport's most effective ambassadors in the Pacific region.
