Sebastian Lali

Born on June 12, 1976, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sebastian Lalli entered the world of martial arts at age 10, beginning with taekwondo before transitioning to muay thai at 14. The defining moment that redirected his path came through Royce Gracie's dominant performances in the early UFC events — a spectacle that made the effectiveness of BJJ impossible to ignore. Inspired by what he witnessed, Lalli took up the art in early 1995, drawn to its proven efficiency on the international stage.

His training began in Curitiba, in the state of Paraná, where BJJ was still in its infancy. Only two academies in the city offered instruction at the time — Academia Guardian and ABB. Lalli enrolled at Academia Guardian, beginning his jiu-jitsu education under coach Penão, who held a brown belt. Those early sessions laid the foundation for a career that would eventually reach the highest levels of international competition.

Lalli's development took a significant turn when Carlos Lima succeeded coach Penão at Academia Guardian. Lima's lineage traced back to both Carlson Gracie and Ricardo De La Riva, and he became the central figure in Lalli's progression through the ranks — awarding him every belt from white through black, which Lalli received in 2002.

Even before reaching black belt, Lalli demonstrated a drive to share the art. As a purple belt, he brought BJJ to Campo Largo, a town roughly 30 kilometers from Curitiba, introducing the sport to a community with little prior exposure. This early coaching work reflected a larger commitment to expanding BJJ beyond the city. In 2003, building on that foundation, Lalli formalized his mission by founding Equipe 1, his own academy. The team grew rapidly and established itself as one of the most prominent BJJ institutions in southern Brazil.

A pivotal new chapter opened in 2006 when Lalli met Leonardo Vieira, widely known as 'Leozinho.' Vieira became Lalli's coach and mentor, and the partnership proved transformative — it was under Vieira's guidance that Lalli produced his finest competitive results, capturing world titles in both gi and no-gi formats.

When Leonardo Vieira made the decision to depart from Brasa Clube de Jiu-Jitsu, he invited Lalli to help build something new. Lalli accepted, and in 2008 became one of the co-founders of Checkmat, alongside the Vieira brothers and Chico Mendes. From those roots, the team grew into one of the most recognized and globally influential organizations in the sport, with academies and competitors spread across multiple continents.

Competing in the Peso Pluma division (64kg/141lbs), Lalli built a résumé defined by consistency and excellence across multiple formats and rulesets. His career peak coincided with his time under Leonardo Vieira's coaching, a period during which he secured his most prestigious titles.

Major Championship Results

In 2007, Lalli claimed the CBJJE World Championship title and the CBJJE South American Championship in the absolute division — a commanding double that announced him as a serious force at the international level. His momentum carried into the following years: in 2010, he achieved a remarkable sweep, winning the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in the master division, the World League Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship in the gi, and the World League Pro Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship. He added a second CBJJE world title in 2011, further cementing his standing among the elite competitors of his generation.

Brazilian National Championships

At the Brazilian National Championships, Lalli proved equally formidable — claiming gold in 2009, in the 2010 master division, and in the 2012 senior 1 division, while reaching the final in both 2006 and the 2011 master division. The breadth of these results, spanning gi, no-gi, masters, and senior categories, reflects a competitor whose dedication to the sport extended well beyond his athletic prime.

Lalli's contributions to Brazilian jiu-jitsu extend well beyond the competition podium. In a region where the sport had almost no presence in the mid-1990s, he became a genuine pioneer. When he first began training in Curitiba, the entire state of Paraná had only a handful of practitioners and two known academies. His decision as a purple belt to bring BJJ to Campo Largo was an early expression of a commitment that would only deepen over time.

The founding of Equipe 1 in 2003 gave that commitment an institutional form. What began as a single academy grew into one of the largest and most respected teams in southern Brazil, producing competitors and instructors who carried the sport further into communities across the region. His role as a founding member of Checkmat amplified this impact on a global scale, but his roots and ongoing work in southern Brazil remain central to his identity within the jiu-jitsu community.

Despite being born in Buenos Aires, Lalli has long represented Brazil on the international stage — a reflection of the deep ties he forged through decades of training, teaching, and competing in the country. His story stands as a testament to the power of individual dedication in shaping the culture and reach of a martial art.
