When the computer at his father's store broke down, an IT expert named João arrived to fix it — and walked through the door carrying his gi bag, brown belt wrapped around it, on his way to jiu-jitsu practice. Ruan's curiosity was immediately piqued. His cousins had trained BJJ and he had heard about it, but he had never seen it up close. He asked João if he could come along to watch a class.

That Wednesday visit to Gávea Gym proved decisive. Captivated by what he witnessed on the mats, Ruan returned the following Monday with a gi of his own, ready to begin training.
