Roger Dias Coelho was born on March 12, 1975, in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil — a coastal city defined by its beach culture and surf scene. Before stepping onto the mats, Coelho was an avid surfer, a pursuit that mirrored the rhythm of his hometown. His introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu traces back to a single defining moment: watching Royce Gracie compete at the inaugural UFC tournament, an event that demonstrated Jiu-Jitsu's effectiveness against fighters from every martial arts background and ignited a wave of Brazilian enthusiasm for the sport.

Coelho's first instructor was Walter Nakagawa, a student of Jorge "Bita" Lima, grounding him from the outset in a traceable and respected BJJ lineage. When Nakagawa eventually left Santos, Gilberto Tostes stepped in as instructor, guiding Coelho through his blue and purple belt progressions and providing the continuity essential to his development as both a competitor and practitioner.

After earning his blue and purple belts under Gilberto Tostes, Coelho affiliated with Roberto Godoi and Jorge Patino — widely known in the BJJ community as "Macaco" — two senior figures who shaped the final stages of his journey to black belt. His time under their guidance coincided with one of the most productive stretches of his competitive career, culminating in a Brazilian National Championship title in 2000 at brown belt — a result that signaled his readiness for promotion.

In December 2000, both Roberto Godoi and Jorge Patino "Macaco" jointly promoted Coelho to black belt, a dual recognition that reflected the high regard two senior instructors held for his technical development and competitive record. His lineage — running from Nakagawa through Tostes to Godoi and Macaco — represents a well-rooted Brazilian BJJ heritage with clear connections to established figures in the sport.

Local and Regional Dominance

His earliest recorded results came at the Santos City Open, where he claimed titles in 1996, 1997, and 1999 — a foundation of local dominance that set the tone for the regional success to follow. At the state level, Coelho earned three São Paulo State titles through the FPJJ in 1999, 2000, and 2001, affirming sustained consistency across several competitive seasons.

National and International Breakthroughs

That regional dominance translated directly to the national stage, where Coelho secured two Brazilian National Championships — first at brown belt in 2000, then at black belt in 2002 — a rare achievement that illustrated his ability to perform at the highest domestic level across belt grades. His international results tracked a parallel upward trajectory: a World Bronze Medal at brown belt in 2000 was followed by a World Silver Medal at black belt in 2003, reflecting clear progression on the global stage.

Following his black belt promotion in December 2000, Coelho relocated to Costa Rica, a country with a then-emerging BJJ scene.
