Ricardo Veloso

Ricardo "Kiko" Velloso was born on October 24, 1962, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and from an early age demonstrated a natural affinity for athletic competition. At 8 years old, he relocated to Brasilia with his family — a move that marked the opening chapter of his martial arts journey. There, Velloso began training judo, a discipline that sharpened his understanding of leverage, balance, and competitive discipline. His dedication carried him to a brown belt, a meaningful achievement that spoke to both his technical aptitude and his commitment to the craft.

At 16, Velloso returned to Rio de Janeiro and temporarily shifted his focus to basketball, competing in the sport until 1978. The combination of judo's technical rigor and basketball's dynamic athleticism built a well-rounded athletic foundation — one that would quietly inform every stage of his evolution as a martial artist.

In 1978, a personal connection redirected the course of Velloso's life. His father's friendship with Carlson Gracie opened the doors to the Carlson Gracie Academy, and Velloso entered with the same seriousness he had brought to every prior athletic endeavor. He immersed himself fully in the Carlson Gracie Team system, training with discipline and consistency across the following decade.

By 1988, that commitment earned him a place at the front of the room as an assistant instructor — a transition that reflected both the depth of his technical development and the trust placed in him by the academy's leadership. Teaching deepened his understanding of the art and cemented his position within the Carlson Gracie lineage.

In the early 1990s, Carlson Gracie invited Velloso to join him in California as the legendary instructor expanded his reach into the United States. Velloso declined — his wife was pregnant, and family came first. Rather than treating the decision as a sacrifice, he channeled it into building something of his own in Brazil, founding his own academy and carrying forward the jiu-jitsu he had spent over a decade mastering.

The bond with the Carlson Gracie lineage proved enduring. In 2008, Velloso rejoined the Carlson Gracie Academy staff, returning to the institution that had shaped him from the beginning. He remained part of that team until 2015, when the academy closed — ending a chapter that had spanned, with some interruption, nearly four decades of his life. Few figures in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can claim such a sustained and personally meaningful connection to a single lineage.

The decision to stay in Brazil, far from marking a retreat from ambition, became the catalyst for Velloso's emergence as an independent force in the sport. Drawing on the expertise accumulated under Carlson Gracie, he founded his own academy, bringing the Carlson Gracie methodology to a new generation of students while operating on his own terms.

Velloso defined his career through a dual identity — academy founder and active competitor. Where many practitioners step back from competition as teaching responsibilities grow, Velloso continued to test himself on the mat well into the Senior and Masters divisions, refusing to separate the practitioner from the teacher. That commitment gave his instruction an authenticity rooted in lived, ongoing experience rather than memory alone.

A lifetime of dedication to the art was ultimately recognized with the Coral belt — one of the highest ranks achievable in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, reserved for those whose contributions span decades of practice, teaching, and service to the community.

Establishing a Competitive Foundation

Velloso's competitive record reflects both his technical skill and his remarkable longevity in the sport. Competing in the Super Pesado division at 100kg/221lbs and representing Brazil across domestic and international stages, he built a body of podium-level results spanning more than fifteen years.

His early competitive credibility took shape in 1996, when he claimed third place at the World Championship in the Master division — a result that signaled his readiness to compete at the sport's highest levels. He carried that momentum into the Brazilian National Championships, capturing gold in the Senior 1 category in both 1999 and 2001, confirming his standing as one of the top domestic competitors in his division.

International Titles and Continued Excellence

On the international stage, Velloso proved equally formidable. He claimed gold at the International Masters & Seniors Championship in both 2003 and 2004 in the Senior 2 division, adding global titles to his national credentials. Bracketing those victories, he collected silver medals at the International Masters & Seniors Championship in 2001 and 2003, along with additional bronze medals across weight division and absolute categories in the years that followed.

Perhaps most tellingly, Velloso continued to perform at a high level deep into his athletic career. A third-place finish at the Brazilian National Championship in the Senior 3 division in 2011 demonstrated that his drive and technical sharpness remained intact well into the later stages of his competitive life — a fitting capstone to a career defined by consistency, resilience, and lifelong devotion to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
