Ricardo Diogo

Ricardo "Rey" Diogo was born on June 22, 1965, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and raised in the Tijuca neighborhood. His earliest athletic pursuits followed an unconventional path — a brief childhood involvement in judo gave way to basketball, which proved to be an unexpected gateway into jiu-jitsu. It was through his basketball training partners that Diogo first heard of the Gracie family and the martial art they had refined into something uniquely devastating.

The encounter that changed the course of his life came not in a gym, but at a cockfighting event — a pastime that Carlson Gracie was famously passionate about. The two men met there, and the conversation that followed led to an invitation: come train at the Carlson Gracie Academy. Diogo was 19 years old when he first stepped onto those mats, and that decision would eventually carry him thousands of miles from Tijuca.

Training under one of Brazil's most storied BJJ programs, Diogo shared the mats with athletes who would become legends — among them Ricardo De La Riva, Amaury Bitetti, and Ricardo Liborio. The environment was demanding, fiercely competitive, and deeply formative, shaping not only Diogo's technical game but his philosophy as an instructor.

One of the defining features of Rey Diogo's credentials is an unbroken chain of promotion running directly through Carlson Gracie. Every belt Diogo received — from white through black — was awarded by Carlson himself, a distinction that places him squarely at the heart of the Carlson Gracie lineage.

Diogo moved to the United States in 1996, arriving in Chicago as a brown belt. His black belt promotion followed in 1997, formalizing his standing among Carlson Gracie's most trusted representatives abroad. Carlson continued to recognize Diogo's growth over the years, personally awarding all of his black belt degrees up to and including his 4th degree — a sustained acknowledgment of both technical mastery and the broader contributions Diogo made to spreading his master's art across North America.

The invitation to relocate to Chicago came in 1996 from Carlson Gracie Junior, who recognized an opportunity to establish a serious Carlson Gracie presence in the American Midwest. Diogo accepted, becoming one of the first members of the Carlson Gracie team to put down permanent roots in the United States as a full-time instructor.

Building an academy from the ground up in a city with no established BJJ culture demanded patience and conviction. Diogo rooted his curriculum firmly in Carlson Gracie's no-nonsense, combat-effective philosophy — one that prized pressure, aggression, and real-world applicability over aesthetic refinement. The academy grew steadily in reputation, drawing students from across the Midwest and cementing Diogo's standing as one of the foremost BJJ instructors in the United States.

Rey Diogo's competitive career spans multiple decades and belt levels, reflecting a sustained commitment to testing himself on the mat even as his responsibilities as an instructor grew. His earliest major titles came at the Brazilian national level, where he claimed four national championship victories — capturing both the weight and absolute divisions at blue belt in 1993, and repeating the feat at purple belt in 1994. A victory at the Rolls Gracie Open added further depth to his early competitive record.

Diogo carried that competitive edge well into the masters and seniors divisions. At the Pan American Championship in 2005, he claimed gold in the absolute division at the black belt senior 1 level. In 2009, he returned to the top of the podium in the absolute division at the black belt senior 2 level — demonstrating that neither time nor the demands of running an academy had dulled his competitive sharpness. Throughout his career, Diogo competed in the heavyweight division, classified as Peso Pesado at 94 kg (207 lbs).

Perhaps the most enduring measure of Rey Diogo's impact on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the United States is the roster of black belts he has produced through his Chicago academy. Across decades of dedicated instruction, Diogo has developed a diverse and accomplished group of practitioners who carry his lineage forward.

Among his most notable graduates are David Koda, Andre Anderson, Perry Hauck, Martin Escobar, Pete Regland, Andre "Alemao" Vasconcellos, Peter Richardson, and Oliver Reich. Yoshi Hasegawa received his black belt through a joint promotion alongside Barbosa, while Aaron Milam earned his through a joint promotion with John Danaher — a connection that links Diogo's academy to one of the most analytically influential figures in the modern sport. The caliber and variety of these graduates speak to Diogo's effectiveness not merely as a technician, but as a long-term developer of BJJ talent in the United States.
