In 1979, Cavalcanti made a pivotal move to the Carlson Gracie Academy, where he began his formative years under one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's most legendary instructors, Carlson Gracie. Training under Carlson exposed him to a demanding, competition-oriented style that emphasized toughness, technical precision, and an aggressive approach to grappling — a philosophy that would define Cavalcanti's own identity on the mat.
After decades of rigorous dedication, Cavalcanti earned his black belt directly under Carlson Gracie in 1995, a milestone representing not only personal achievement but entry into an elite BJJ lineage. The bond between student and mentor endured until Carlson Gracie's passing in 2006, and the values Carlson instilled — in competition, in coaching, and in the transmission of the art — remain central to Cavalcanti's teaching philosophy.
