Reylson Gracie

Reylson Gracie was born in 1943 in Brazil, the son of Carlos Gracie, the founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Raised at the heart of the Gracie family, Reylson was immersed in the art's self-defence philosophy almost from birth, beginning his jiu-jitsu training at the age of four. His primary instructor during these formative years was his uncle Helio Gracie, one of the most influential figures in the art's history, whose emphasis on technical precision and leverage-based self-defence shaped Reylson's understanding of jiu-jitsu at its deepest level.

Raised within the Gracie Academy environment, Reylson's development was inseparable from the family's broader mission of refining and disseminating their martial tradition. By the age of 14, he had already begun teaching the Gracie jiu-jitsu self-defence system at the Gracie Academy — a testament to both his technical maturity and the trust the family placed in him as a representative of their methods.

Reylson Gracie's ascent through the ranks culminated in 1962 when he received the rank of professor — the Gracie family's designation for black belt — at just 18 years of age, making him one of the youngest members of the family to earn that distinction. The following year, in 1963, he opened his own gym, becoming the first of Carlos Gracie's sons to establish an independent academy, a milestone that reflected both his ambition and the confidence earned through years of dedicated instruction.

In 1975, Reylson opened what would become his most celebrated academy at Shopping da Gávea in Rio de Janeiro — a prestigious location that drew the elite of Rio society. The Gávea academy established itself as a defining institution in the city's martial arts landscape, cementing Reylson's reputation as one of the foremost instructors of the authentic Gracie self-defence tradition.

Beyond his work on the mat, Reylson Gracie made lasting contributions to the structural foundations of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that are often overlooked. He played a significant role in shaping the language of the art, creating names for several techniques that helped standardize BJJ terminology. This work of nomenclature — rarely celebrated in competition records or highlight reels — was essential to the art's coherent transmission across generations and geographies, giving instructors and students a shared vocabulary through which complex concepts could be communicated clearly.

Reylson is equally recognized as a visionary in BJJ gi culture. He is credited as the first producer of coloured gis, departing from the traditional white uniform long established in Japanese-derived martial arts. This innovation introduced aesthetic diversity to the mat and influenced BJJ's identity as a distinct and evolving discipline, contributing to the culture of personalised training attire that defines the global BJJ community today.

In 1991, Reylson Gracie relocated to the United States, motivated by his disagreement with the severe economic policies introduced by Brazilian President Fernando Collor de Mello. His departure marked the beginning of a chapter spanning more than two decades, during which the Gracie self-defence philosophy took root in new American communities.

Reylson established his first American academy in Corona del Mar, California, before relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada, and eventually settling in Delray Beach and Boca Raton, Florida. Throughout these transitions, he continued teaching the traditional Gracie self-defence system, maintaining fidelity to the approach instilled in him by Helio Gracie and Carlos Gracie. A defining milestone came in 1995, when Reylson promoted Ken Gabrielson to black belt — making Gabrielson one of the very first American black belts in jiu-jitsu, a recognition that places Reylson among the pioneering figures who established BJJ's roots in the United States.

After more than twenty years of teaching in the United States, Reylson Gracie returned to Rio de Janeiro in 2012. In an interview with the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, he expressed clear discomfort with the increasingly sport-oriented direction modern jiu-jitsu had taken, drawing a sharp distinction between the competitive framework that had come to dominate the art and the original self-defence tradition established by his father Carlos Gracie.

Upon his return, Reylson re-opened his historic academy at Shopping da Gávea, returning to the very location that had defined his earlier legacy in Rio de Janeiro. His stated intention was to restore and preserve the Gracie family's original martial tradition in Brazil — framing his return not merely as a personal homecoming, but as a deliberate act of cultural and martial stewardship in defence of the art's foundational principles.

Reylson Gracie holds the rank of 9th degree red belt, the highest recognition in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and stands as one of the most respected representatives of the authentic Gracie style. His career spans more than six decades of teaching, innovation, and guardianship of a martial tradition that has become a global phenomenon. His contributions touch virtually every dimension of the art's development — from the technical vocabulary used to describe its movements, to the coloured gis worn on mats around the world, to the lineage of black belts he has promoted across two continents.

As the father of Rodrigo Gracie, a well-known MMA and BJJ competitor, Reylson ensured the continuation of the Gracie name within the modern competitive landscape, even as he remained a champion of the family's traditional self-defence philosophy. His life's work stands as a bridge between the foundational vision of Carlos Gracie and the generations of practitioners who continue to train in that tradition today.
