He subsequently relocated to Las Vegas before settling in Delray Beach and Boca Raton, Florida, where he continued to teach under the Reylson Gracie Academy banner. One of the most historically significant milestones of his time in the United States came in 1995, when he promoted Ken Gabrielson to black belt — making Gabrielson one of the very first Americans to receive a BJJ black belt. That promotion stands as a landmark moment in the art's spread to North America, representing the transfer of Gracie lineage to a new generation of practitioners on American soil. Reylson spent over two decades teaching in the United States, steadily expanding the reach of the Gracie self-defence philosophy throughout the country.

Reylson Gracie has been a consistent and vocal advocate for jiu-jitsu as a self-defence system rooted in Carlos Gracie's original vision, expressing concern about the art's drift toward competitive sport at the expense of practical application. In 2012, he returned to Rio de Janeiro with the stated intention of restoring his father's martial arts tradition in Brazil, re-opening his historic academy at Shopping da Gávea — the same location that had defined his legacy through the 1970s and 1980s.

In an interview with the prominent Brazilian newspaper O Globo at the time of his return, Reylson publicly articulated his critique of modern sport BJJ and his commitment to preserving the self-defence principles that had guided his own formation under Helio Gracie. His return and the reopening of the Gávea academy underscored a broader generational tension within the BJJ community — one that continues to animate debate between self-defence purists and sport-focused practitioners across the world.
