Rafael Barbosa was born on January 8, 1983, in Brazil, and his journey toward becoming one of the most recognized names in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began at a remarkably young age. At just 11 years old, he watched Royce Gracie dismantle opponents at the inaugural UFC event — a performance that redefined what was possible in combat sports and set the trajectory of his life in motion. That single moment of inspiration drove him to seek out the mats and commit himself fully to the art.

His early development came under the guidance of Alexey Cruz, who established the technical foundation for what would become an exceptional career. Barbosa later came under the tutelage of André Almeida — known in the BJJ community as 'Dedeco' — who became his primary mentor and the instructor responsible for every belt in his progression. In 2002, Almeida awarded Barbosa his black belt, a milestone that arrived with immediate competitive validation: that same year, Barbosa claimed gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals, announcing himself as a serious force in the lightweight division.

Building a Legacy in the Peso Leve Division

Rafael Barbosa — widely known by his nickname 'Formiga' — built his competitive reputation in the Peso Leve division (76kg / 167lbs) and became synonymous with one of the most technically demanding positions in BJJ: the Butterfly Guard. His capacity to control space, generate sweeps, and threaten submissions from this position earned him a standing as one of the foremost butterfly guard specialists the sport has produced. Where others rely on static grips and reactive movement, Formiga uses the butterfly guard as an active, mobile system — constantly creating angles and destabilizing opponents before they can establish their own base.

World-Class Results Across Two Decades

His competitive record throughout the 2000s reflects sustained excellence at the highest levels of the sport. Barbosa reached the podium at the IBJJF World Championship on three separate occasions — earning bronze in 2005, 2007, and 2009 — demonstrating a consistent ability to perform among the world's elite in his division. In 2007, he also claimed silver at the IBJJF Pan Championship, further cementing his standing as a top-tier competitor. His presence at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals was equally reliable, with podium finishes in 2003 and 2006 complementing his earlier gold in 2002.

As Barbosa transitioned into the Masters category, his competitive drive remained fully intact. He captured the IBJJF Masters World Championship title in 2014, successfully defended it in 2015, and returned to claim the title again in 2018. His 2015 campaign was particularly notable — beyond his divisional title, he advanced to the final of the absolute division, showcasing the breadth of his game against competitors from across weight classes. Throughout his international career, Barbosa has represented the United States, bringing his distinctive butterfly guard style to competition stages around the world.

Co-Founding Soul Fighters

Rafael Barbosa's contributions to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu extend well beyond his personal competitive achievements. In 2008, he co-founded Soul Fighters alongside Augusto Mendes — known as 'Tanquinho' — and several other key figures, with a guiding philosophy centered on collaborative training and collective development. The vision was clear from the outset: build an environment where high-level practitioners push one another forward rather than compete in isolation.

The results were immediate. Soul Fighters claimed back-to-back titles at the CBJJ Brazilian Teams Nationals in 2008 and 2009, validating the culture Barbosa and his co-founders had built. Over the years that followed, the association grew into one of the most recognized BJJ teams on the global stage, producing high-level competitors and instructors across multiple generations of practitioners.

Launching Double Five

In 2019, Barbosa chose to pursue a new chapter, departing Soul Fighters to co-found the Double Five association — commonly known as D5 — alongside João Gabriel Rocha. The formation of D5 represents a continuation of Barbosa's long-standing commitment to creating elite training environments built on strong partnerships and a shared vision for the sport. Rooted in the same foundational values that guided his work with Soul Fighters, D5 reflects Barbosa's belief that the best BJJ is forged through trust, mutual accountability, and a relentless pursuit of technical excellence.
