Pierre-Olivier Leclerc

Pierre-Olivier Leclerc was born in May 1993 in Longueuil, Québec, Canada, where winter sports culture shaped his early athletic identity. Skiing and ice hockey dominated his formative years, with the latter becoming a serious competitive pursuit — Leclerc spent approximately ten years competing in ice hockey, forging the discipline and competitive edge that would later translate directly to the grappling mats.

At 18, Leclerc relocated to Montreal, Québec's largest city and Longueuil's neighboring metropolis. The move marked a defining shift in his athletic trajectory. Coming of age during George St-Pierre's era of dominance in mixed martial arts, Leclerc found himself drawn toward combat sports — inspired by what GSP had demonstrated was possible for a Canadian fighter on the world stage.

In 2014, Leclerc stepped through the same doors that had shaped George St-Pierre, joining TriStar Gym in Montreal. Under head coach Firas Zahabi, he found both a mentor and a training environment that would define the arc of his grappling career.

The Heel Hook Wave Reaches Montreal

The following year proved pivotal for the sport. The heel hook revolution was gathering force, driven largely by Eddie Cummings and his training partners out of the Blue Basement workspace in New York City. Recognizing the significance of this emerging game, Firas Zahabi invited Eddie Cummings and his primary colleague Gary Tonon to TriStar to introduce the team to heel hooks and lower-body entanglements. The sessions proved transformative for a group of young grapplers within the gym — most notably Leclerc and close training partners Oliver Taza and Ethan Crelinsten. The three threw themselves into mastering leg locks and entanglement systems, collectively becoming one of the most technically advanced no-gi groups in North America.

Gordon Ryan and the Acceleration

A further catalyst arrived through TriStar colleague and MMA fighter Tom Breese, who had developed a deep interest in John Danaher's instructional system at the Blue Basement. While preparing for a cage match, Breese brought one of Danaher's top students — Gordon Ryan, then a purple belt — to TriStar as part of his training camp. Ryan's already formidable leg-lock application pushed Leclerc and his partners to accelerate their own development within the system, sharpening their understanding of what mastery in that game truly demanded.

The visits from Gordon Ryan, Eddie Cummings, and Gary Tonon made one thing unmistakably clear: the source of this technical evolution was John Danaher's Blue Basement in New York City. Motivated by what he had witnessed firsthand, Leclerc began making regular trips to New York during his purple and brown belt years to train directly under John Danaher. Through that sustained immersion, he became an integral part of the broader workgroup that pioneered the revival and systematization of the leg-lock game — a collective that reshaped submission grappling at its highest levels throughout the late 2010s.

Despite his extended time with John Danaher's group, Leclerc remained a loyal representative of TriStar Gym, maintaining his connection to the Montreal academy and to coach Firas Zahabi. When Danaher's original workgroup dissolved and several of its members founded the B-Team in Austin, Texas, Leclerc followed much of his training there as well — continuing to develop alongside the athletes who had most shaped his grappling identity.

On January 14, 2023, Firas Zahabi formally recognized Leclerc's decade-long development with a promotion to black belt — an acknowledgment of both his technical mastery and his role as one of the defining products of the TriStar and Danaher ecosystems.

Leclerc competes in the middleweight division (82kg/181lbs) as a no-gi specialist, and his competition record reflects a career built methodically through the sport's most demanding circuits.

Colored Belt Dominance

His development as a colored belt competitor was marked by consistent results on the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi circuit — capturing gold at the 2019 edition as a purple belt, then repeating that performance at the 2022 edition as a brown belt. Bookending those titles, a silver medal at the IBJJF European Championship No-Gi in 2019 and a matching silver at the same event in 2024 illustrate his sustained presence on the international no-gi scene across years and belt ranks. An early third-place finish at the BJJ Fanatics GP in 2021 offered an additional signal of his capacity to compete against elite professional grapplers before reaching the black belt level.

Black Belt Breakthrough on the ADCC Circuit

Following his black belt promotion, Leclerc made an immediate statement on the ADCC circuit. In 2023, he captured gold at the ADCC Dallas Open, establishing himself as a genuine contender within the qualification structure. He carried that momentum into 2024, advancing to the final of the ADCC Las Vegas Open before finishing as runner-up — a result that reinforced his consistency at the sport's top tier.
