Surviving the Most Dangerous Submission Hunter in MMA
At UFC 326, Holloway entered as the reigning BMF titleholder, stepping into a grappling-heavy five-round main event against Charles Oliveira — known as "Do Bronx" and recognized as one of MMA's most prolific submission artists. Oliveira mounted a relentless offensive grappling attack throughout the bout, threatening repeatedly with back attacks, a neck crank, and a series of additional submission attempts. Holloway defended every one of them.
Oliveira ultimately claimed the BMF belt via unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the bout 50-45. His record stood at 37-11 at that time. The Brazilian controlled the grappling exchanges from the opening bell — securing takedowns, taking Holloway's back on multiple occasions, and dictating the pace across all five rounds. Despite the lopsided scorecards, Holloway's mat resilience and the consistency of his submission defense left a lasting impression on the broader grappling community.
Black Belt Recognition
Following the performance, Pedro Sauer — a BJJ legend and black belt under Rickson Gracie — awarded Holloway his BJJ black belt in March 2026. Sauer marked the occasion with a social media post reading: "Our new black belt, after demonstrating an incredible defense at UFC." The promotion drew considerable public attention and some skepticism, as it was grounded in Holloway's defensive grappling performance in an MMA context rather than a traditional competition-track progression through ranked belts. The award was covered in an article authored by Claudio Martin.
