Marcos Galvão

Marcos Galvão was born on June 23, 1982, in Brazil, and his path to martial arts began not on the BJJ mats but through the discipline of Judo. At age 11, he stepped into competitive training drawn by the sport's emphasis on throwing and grappling. An early competition loss, however, proved decisive — rather than fueling his resolve, the defeat left him disillusioned, and he walked away from Judo entirely.

That pivot would prove fortuitous. Galvão discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and found in it the challenge and fulfillment Judo had not provided. His first BJJ instructor was Nonato Machado, Nova União's top representative in the Amazonian state, who introduced Galvão to the fundamentals of the art and laid the groundwork for his early technical development. Under Machado's guidance over several formative years, Galvão built a grappling foundation that would carry him through a decorated career in both submission grappling and mixed martial arts.

Blue to Brown: Building a Championship Pedigree

At age 13, Galvão relocated to Rio de Janeiro — a move that dramatically accelerated his development. Remaining within the Nova União family, he came under the direct tutelage of the team's co-founder, André Pederneiras, widely known as Dedé and one of the most respected figures in Brazilian combat sports.

Under Pederneiras, Galvão's competitive career flourished across the lower belt divisions. He captured significant titles at blue, purple, and brown belt, steadily establishing himself as one of Brazil's most promising young grapplers. The pinnacle of his pre-black belt career came when he claimed a World Championship title at brown belt at just 16 years old — one of the youngest competitors ever to reach that distinction at that level, a result that signaled his exceptional potential.

Black Belt Promotion and the Transition to MMA

Around 2003, Pederneiras awarded Galvão his black belt, formally completing a journey that had begun more than a decade earlier in the Amazon. Recognizing in his student the athleticism, grappling acumen, and competitive temperament needed to succeed in the cage, Pederneiras also served as the catalyst for Galvão's introduction to mixed martial arts.

Early Promise and the WEC Challenge

Armed with a black belt and instincts sharpened through years of high-level BJJ competition, Galvão transitioned into professional MMA and built an early record that earned him a place in the World Extreme Cagefighting organization — the WEC — widely regarded at the time as the preeminent platform for lighter weight fighters in the sport.

The WEC, however, presented Galvão with his stiffest test yet. Back-to-back losses inside the organization forced a moment of honest self-assessment and demanded a meaningful response.

Relocation and Rebuilding

That response came through a conversation with close friend and fellow Nova União standout Victor Shaolin Ribeiro, who invited Galvão to relocate to New York and train alongside him full time. Galvão accepted without hesitation. The move represented a profound commitment to his own development — a willingness to uproot his life in pursuit of excellence. Training full time in New York, he rebuilt his game, refined his approach to MMA, and worked his way back toward the elite level of the sport. The WEC setbacks, in retrospect, were not the end of his story but the catalyst for its most important chapter.

The Title Fight

The full-time dedication Galvão committed to following his move to the United States paid off on the grandest stage of his MMA career. On March 27, 2015, Galvão entered the cage at Bellator 135 to challenge for the Bellator Bantamweight Championship against Joe Warren, a decorated combat wrestler and former Bellator champion known for his relentless physical style.

Galvão rose to the occasion in emphatic fashion. In the second round, he secured a kneebar submission on Warren, forcing the tap and claiming the Bellator Bantamweight Championship. The finish was a direct expression of his black belt credentials — a high-level submission grappling technique executed with precision at the defining moment of a championship fight.

The victory over Warren stood as the culmination of a years-long career resurgence. From the Amazonian state where he first learned to grapple, through Rio de Janeiro under Pederneiras' guidance, through the adversity of consecutive WEC losses and the determination required to relocate and rebuild in New York — every step of Galvão's journey converged in that second-round finish.
